For mastermind first of all I try to find MISS! so that I could eliminate some of the colours.

  26. J says:

fartpilot, the best I can suggest is to do a Web search for “mastermind strategies” or something. The usual advice for a first guess (AABB) doesn’t work here, as it will not let you make a guess with any repeated colors, so you really need to be lucky in your first few guesses. If you can get it to 3 or 4 correct colors in the first three guesses, you should be able to get it, making one change at a time.

Unfortunately we can’t be any more helpful than that, because as I’ve said, the code changes not only between one game and the next, but also within a game session — if you get “game over”, you can start guessing again, but it’ll be for a different sequence.

If you don’t get it in ten tries, don’t be embarrassed — the deck is stacked against you. (I found one site which says that for a four-peg game with ten colors, the number of expected guesses needed is somewhere between 3 and 20. The standard four-peg six-color game, which normally allows 8 guesses, is always solvable with 6 or fewer guesses.) Keep trying until you get lucky.

my codes not working in the door……..

  30. Reka says:

Dunno if this is actually a useful thing or not, but you don’t have to have the mastermind game solved for the door panel to work. I.e. you can use brute force on the combination, and it’ll eventually open. Problem is, there are 5040 possibilities:
    P(10,4) = 10!/(10-4)! = 10x9x8x7x6!/6! = 10x9x8x7 = 5040

I suppose if you’ve figured out the four colors but not their order, and you only have one guess left, it might be worth it to not use that last guess (so the combination doesn’t get reset) and go try the 24 (4! = 4x3x2) possibilities on the door.
