I can’t quite get the solution to the number puzzle, although I have seemed to get all the symbols:

The “hardest” one might be the smiley-face, which is located in the middle of the room under the hood of the tea-set from where you also get the spade-shaped key. The others are quite straight-forward.

But now I have no idea how to get the numbers to the three-symbol solution.

Although the book has two examples how to combine three symbols, As of yet I have no clue how the result was achieved. The only thing apparent with my numbers is that the first symbol seems to have the greatest impact on the result, since the result is in both cases only somewhat higher than the first symbol value. How to go from there I have no clue.

Help, anyone?

add up the corresponding numbers to the symbols: 5418+5274+3891 and devide by 3 = 4861 for box in high kabinet

Apparently, you live in a world where hotel rooms are carefully prepared for your escaping pleasure. After you shut off some fairly horrifying elevator music, you notice you have an “escape” card imprinted with room number 2514.

This might help you get back in after you actually manage to leave, so you keep it in your pocket. Time to look around.

You examine a wall that seems to be made out of paper. The door is locked shut, but you notice two screws that may be holding the door in place at its base.

You’re apparently standing on top of a serving table, which makes for an interesting perspective on the room. You turn to the right, and see a small red container on the edge of the table. You open it to reveal a tea set. Clicking randomly on the tea set gives you a spade-shaped key to carry around.

You look at the pot lid, and flip it over to reveal a smiley-face and the number 5418. Perhaps that’s your room number at Wal-Mart once you escape?

There’s a tea pot on a small table in the corner. You float over there, wondering why you seem to be nine feet tall. There’s an electrical outlet next to the table. You examine it, and a voice from below (can’t be from above, because you’re already hovering near the ceiling) tells you it would be wiser to fill a kettle with water before playing with electricity. Yes, water and electrical outlets mix nicely. The voice from below wants to electrocute you.

You examine what must be the kettle, but it’s empty.

You look at the wall, where there are two paintings. The one on the left is of a few trees in a field. It’s very green. It has a flag symbol and the number 7152. Your room number at the United Nations?

The painting on the right is a mountain on a blue background. No numbers, but you can click on the sides of the painting and make it move. Perhaps there’s a code somewhere that will tell you which corners to click. That’s how these pictures always seem to work, though it’s hard to conceive of a locking mechanism that would remove a picture from a wall by clicking on corners.

You turn to the right, and see a closet door. You tug at the handle, but find that something is blocking you from opening the door.

You look at what might be a clothes stand in one corner. It has a clover-like symbol on a brown background, and the number 3891. There are two grids of four-by-four fields on the stand, but they don’t seem to do anything for now.

Turning to the right you see a very busy wall. On the left side there’s a flower arrangement near the floor. It’s purple, and contains a Star of David symbol with the number 9564. Above it is a cabinet, but the doors are held shut with wire.

Next to the cabinet, you see a small screen. You open it to reveal the rest of the screen surrounding a candlestick (whomever decorated this room had very eclectic tastes). There is a crescent moon and a star symbol next to the number 5274.

Next, you see shelves going to the ceiling. The top shelf contains a box. Strangely, you’re now about two feet tall and can’t reach the box. The floating suddenly stopped, just when it would have been convenient. The next two shelves contain vases.

The fourth shelf contains a little curio holder with a tea cup. Next to the tea cup are three symbols, pointing to a four-digit number. You can change the number. You recognize the symbols, maybe it’s time to do figure out what to do with them.

The fifth shelf contains a book with what looks like a math problem. You see the five symbols you’ve found. And it claims there are two examples to decipher. The first is Wal-Mart, United Nations, Clover, pointing to 5487. That’s 5418, 7152, 3891 -> 5487. Doesn’t seem like any form of basic addition or subtraction. The second is United Nations, Israel (Star of David), Turkey (crescent and star) pointing to 7330. That’s 7152, 9564, 5274 -> 7330. So far, these math problems aren’t obvious.

The bottom shelf contains a blue hexagon, and a button you can press to change the number inside the hexagon. This is fun, but not very satisfying.

On the right, you see a wide-screen television. You play with it, but the impatient voice of the dungeon tells you that you need a remote control.

You think for a few minutes about the numbers, and realize they do have something to do with addition. You add the three together, divide by three, and that leads to the answer. So now you have a formula for interpreting symbols.

You decide to play with the curio shelf. The code is Wal-Mart, Clover, Turkey. Or 5418, 3891, 5274. That averages to 4861. This allows you to open the shelf and take a screwdriver. Playing with the screwdriver, you notice the blade can be either a regular driver or a Phillips driver. You set it to Phillips.

Using the screwdriver, you remove the two screws at the bottom of the long door. This reveals a long stick that was holding the door closed. And now you have a small dining chamber to enter.

In front of you, there’s a window overlooking the city. And two chairs, which seem to be just furniture. There’s a small ash tray on the table. You look down and take a book of matches.

On the edge of the table, you see a machine that looks like either a tennis-ball pitching machine or a medieval torture device. It’s locked to the table, and there’s nothing you can do with it. However, it is labeled “HotWater”, which might have something to do with the voice from below and the kettle.

You turn to the right and see a shelf with a red hexagon on top. You can press its button and change the red number. But, again, there’s not much point to it. You open the drawer on the right and remove a remote. You click on it for a while, because these remotes never have batteries. The voice from below laughs and says, no, idiot, this one actually does happen to have batteries already. You feel quite sheepish.

The drawer on the left opens with your spade-shaped key. You take out an electrical cord. Presumably the voice will let you insert that in the outlet when it’s time.

Turning to the left of the dining area, you see a refrigerator. On top of the fridge there’s a green hexagon. Pressing the buttons, you change a yellow number from 0-to-9. Why yellow and not green. The voice from below has no answers.

But wait, there’s no 8 amongst those yellow numbers. And then you realize the blue hexagon cannot display 7, and the red hexagon cannot display the number 5.

You examine the frige, and see the door has a lock consisting of three smaller hexagons. You can change these yellow numbers, too. Now you have a code to apply: 758. You open the fridge and take a bottle of water.

Now that you have a stick, and figure that might help you with your height problem near the tall shelves. You use the stick to take down the box. Unfortunately, the box is locked.

It’s time to watch television. Channel 1 has a BIRD and the number 5163. Perhaps the bird does math. Channel 2 shows a door handle, and the voice talks about streaming and the other side of the door. Channel three shows a white star and what looks like a color code of blue, green, green, red, green, red and yellow. Channels 4-12 show only snow. This must be a cheap hotel.

You try to use the electrical cord to plug in the kettle, but the voice again demands some water. So you take your bottle of water and place it in the kettle. Now you can plug it in. The water refuses to boil until you spin around the room, for some reason. So you spin a little, and then you take the kettle.

Now you go back to the tennis ball machine and pour in the water. The ball rises to the top, the word “DRIB” appears (hey, that’s bird backward), and you have four numbers to play with. You take the golden ball from the top of the machine.

Thinking of the television, you reverse the bird code, and get 3615. Now, of all things, you have a thin piece of iron resembling a ruler. What ruler, you ask? Certainly not Queen Elizabeth. She is not made from iron at all.

So you have two new toys – a ball and a ruler. Thinking of channel 2 and all that focus on the location of the door handle, you use the ruler and slide it where you saw the handle on camera. You had tried this with the card key and the screwdriver earlier, of course. The ruler works, though.

Now you’re in an area of the room that has no less than eight doors. The row of four doors is locked. But you can open the double-doors. Opening the door on the left, you find a pink ball. There are towels, but you can’t do anything with them.

On the right side, you find another tennis ball machine. This one has slots for three balls, and the slots have the numbers 4, 1 and 3. The pink and gold balls fit in those slots, but nothing happens.

There’s a single door on the left side of the enclosure for the sink. The handle looks like it takes a screwdriver. But that doesn’t work.

You look at the sink area. Water spurts out from an electric eye. You can fill your water bottle. Maybe you’re thirsty? You also take a thin green bottle. Time to squirt everything you can. The eighth door leads you back to your room.

In squirting, you quickly find that your thin green bottle is really a candle holder. You take out the candle. Then you try and put it in the candle-holder where the small screen was, but the voice tells you to light the candle first. Seems backward, but you do it anyway with your matches.

You place the candle in the holder, and close the screen. And you see stars. Blue in the top left, red in the top right, green in the bottom left and yellow in the bottom right. This one’s easy. You remember the third television channel (blue, green, green, red, green, red, yellow), go over to the mountain picture, and click the corresponding corners. The picture rises, and you have a coin (not the lucky one, I assume) and a stone ball.

Where would a coin go? Well, it looked like the locked single door next to the sink would be opened with a screwdriver. Maybe it takes something larger. You use the coin on the door handle and the door opens, revealing a toilet.

Fortunately, clicking on the toilet does nothing, but you can raise the paper holder, and take a club-shaped key. This key opens that locked box we knocked down earlier. And inside the box we find a pair of pliers.

Pliers usually have a wire-cutting attachment, so you walk over to the cabinet that’s secured with wire, and you use the pliers to cut the wire. You open the cabinet doors and see a strange device (hey, the voice called it strange – I’d just go with yet another tennis ball machine).

You can put balls inside the machine. And the machine adds the value of the two balls that are currently in the machine. This might help us figure out what balls to use with the machine in the closet. However, you find two balls already in the machine – a ceramic blue one and a glass one.

You start playing with the machine to find the value assigned to each ball. Glass and pink are 9. Stone and pink are 8. Ceramic and pink are 7. Gold and pink are 6.

Now try gold. Glass and gold are 5, stone and gold are 4, ceramic and gold are 3. So the order must be gold, ceramic, stone, glass and pink, from 1 to 5. You test this a couple of times with new combinations, and the pattern holds.

You need balls worth 1, 3 and 4 for the other machine. The machine here always holds two balls. So you must leave the balls worth 2 and 5 in this machine – pink and ceramic. You go to the closet machine and place the glass, gold and stone balls in order. You receive a heart-shaped key.

You use the heart-shaped key to open the set of four doors. But should you escape? You haven’t found any Happy Coins. Is this even an escape yet (I wish Tesshi-e would add a confirm button for when it’s actually time to leave).

You don’t see anything, so you step inside. There’s yet another door in a small chamber. There’s a card slot. You enter your card, and it asks for your room number. You key in 2514 and the light goes from red to green. Now surely you shouldn’t yet escape.

To the left, you find a water tank. There’s a pipe to the left of the tank. You put your water bottle on the pipe and half the tank fills. The voice says that’s not enough. But, strangely, you can’t remove your water bottle.

You still have your kettle, though. Going back to the sink, you fill the kettle. But that doesn’t work. Finally, you look at your screwdriver and realize that it’s not a flat-head and a Phillips head. It’s a Phillips head and a hole-punch. So you set the screwdriver to the hole-punch side and punch a few holes in the bottom of the water bottle. Now you can pour the kettle on to the water bottle and fill the tank.

You see three new symbols – Wal-Mart, Clover, Israel. Using your old formula, you come up with 6291. You go back to the room and enter 6291 in the machine on the shelf – and nothing happens.

Maybe it’s a room number this time. You put your card key back in the door lock and enter the new number. After all, both the water tank and the card reader have the same green box symbol. That works. Now you have a Happy Coin. It’s safe to try and leave.

But the door is locked. Try 2514 again, and now you can open the door. All of a sudden you’re taking a bath and having a drink. This is apparently very lucky.
