The drawing behind the blue picture refers to the location of the key to the bookcase.

The numbers on the inside of the bookcase refer to the black and white safe puzzle.

To open the safe, move the handle across the region denoted by the color in the clue.

For example, 1 is white, so the first turn should move the handle across a white region. 2 is also white, so the second turn moves the handle back across that same white region. There are eight handle turns.
