A little bit buggy with the chessboard puzzle.

Ah. Notice the newspaper. The word at the top consists of letters which are also Roman numerals: CIVIL=100-1-5-1-50. Enter code on cabinet.

Stumped. I’ve got the coal into powder, saltpetre, and 8 of 9 plates. Can’t find the sulfur, and can’t figure out where clues are to any of the puzzles. There are 16 notes on the music staff and 16 squares on the chessboard, but I haven’t figured out a connection. No clue as to the other puzzles. Hint please!

@ Caty, those notes you’re referring to are called eighth notes.
