Martijn Kunst: Base Jumping II coming soon!

Categories: Interviews, Preview   41 comments - February 14, 2007

Base Jumping 2Martijn Kunst, the talented Dutch developer behind the previously reviewed Base Jumping, Bee Commando and Rodent Tree Jump is working hard on completing the sequel to his most popular game, Base Jumping. Martijn was kind enough to answer a few questions and reveal exclusive information about the development of his game.

Base Jumping 2FreeGamesNews: When did you come up with the idea of developing a sequel to the highly popular Base Jumping?

Martijn: I’ve always felt Base Jumping was poorly executed. So I’ve been trying to make up excuses to redo the game. I wanted the new version to have a new concept instead of slick graphics only.
While I was cleaning some fitness equipment on my Xmas visit to my parents I finally got a good idea for the sequel.

FreeGamesNews: when did development start on the game and when do you expect to release Base Jumping 2?

Martijn: Development started at the end of January. Providing no disasters happen, the game could be ready before the end of February. But I like to work on small projects and games when something comes up, so it’s not possible to give an estimated release date.

Martijn Kunst (Bubble Box – Base Jumping) Interview

Bubble Box

Martijn Kunst, a Dutch Flash games developer, recently took some time to do an email interview with FreeGamesNews (thanks Martijn!).

FreeGamesNews: Please introduce yourself and tell us a little about BubbleBox, your own games web portal?

Martijn: I’ve been developing games as a fulltime job for exactly one year now. The first couple of games I made were sold to game sites. After reading about those sites ripping off developers, I decided to set up my own portal site, to see if this was true. I was hoping that some day I could make a living from publishing my games on my own website. I never expected BubbleBox to become an instant success, but it was. The site got close to one million visitors in the third month it was up. This allows me to work on creating new games for the site exclusively.

FreeGamesNews: Can you tell us a bit about your background?

Martijn: I haven’t been able to make my mind up about anything in the past ten years or so. I’ve been moving around like a Gipsy working at over a hundred different companies, and doing quite a few studies. But after the economy went downhill, this became an increasingly difficult lifestyle to keep up.

So I decided it would be best to work really hard and try to become good at something. It also had to be something that wouldn’t keep me bounded to a fixed location. I did have a degree in real estate, but I’m not a great salesperson, and that job would not allow me to move around freely. The only thing I could come up with was web design. But soon, I found out that getting new clients is hard work, so thankfully after a while I decided to do games instead. I have always had many plans for new games (most of which are not computer based) and I guess I’ve found something I have a talent for.

Extreme Heli Boarding 2

Categories: Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Sports    - March 4, 2010

After a very long hiatus, Martijn Kunst has just released his latest action sport game, Extreme Heli Boarding 2.

“Jump out of a helicopter into the untouched snow, make massive jumps and perform tricks at extreme height.”

You are given 30 seconds to score as many points as you can. Reach the next checkpoint to get extra time.

Use the arrow keys to move and press the spacebar to jump; hold down the spacebar to jump higher.

The key in this game is to make as many flips and long jumps as possible.

The last 100 results are automatically saved, so that other players can compete against each others. It’s really fun to see your rank updated in real time. Unfortunately, there is no overall highscore table, which is  disappointing. Martijn, if you read this, please add one!

Fire Flies

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Skill   3 comments - November 29, 2007

Fire FliesFire Flies“At night the sky is filled with fireflies. Those cute glowing insects have one main disadvantage: they cannot hide in the dark.

Go hunting for fireflies and try to set a top score after completing all fifteen levels!”

That’s the goal with Fire Flies, the latest game release by Martijn Kunst, the author of Base Jumping.

Use your mouse to aim and release a deadly spray towards the fireflies. The spray bounces on objects and walls, causing flies to explode in a chain reaction. Fire Flies reminds you of Boomshine, and you will need great patience and even greater luck to complete the 15 levels of the game.

Fire Flies is nicely done, the soundtrack is very relaxing, the difficulty level progress smoothly and the game features a high score board.

Overall, Fire Flies is a very simple but very entertaining game!

Mad Virus

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   1 comment - March 23, 2007

Mad VirusMad VirusMad Virus is a new puzzle game released yesterday by Martijn Kunst on his website, BubbleBox.

The game offers you a new version of the classic Virus 2, and just like in the original, your goal here is “to grow a virus that must cover the entire board before you run out of moves”.

You control each cell with a pair of eyes. The first level is essentially a training level: use your mouse to select a color on the left side of the game window. This will change the color of all your controlled cells and assimilate all the adjacent ones with the same color.

As you progress through the game, levels become more and more challenging, and being able to choose from different starting cells is a nice addition that becomes essential from level 8 or so, once the number of available turns starts to get low.

If Mad Virus is maybe not really innovative, the game is nicely done and surpasses Virus 2 in every way: it’s time for an update of our recommended games page!

Rodent Tree Jump

Categories: Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online   2 comments - October 17, 2006

Rodent Tree JumpRodent Tree JumpRodent Tree Jump is a new game developed by Martijn Kunst. Released last Friday at Bubblebox, Martjin’s games portal, the object here is simply to hurl your little squirrel through the air and make it land as close as possible to the target sign.

Defeat the other squirrels in a three-round competition, and progress through five different leagues to be able to compete against and hopefully defeat the squirrels King!

The gameplay of this game borrows elements from Base Jumping (4 competitors in five different leagues for the King title) and from Savages (the aiming process), two other games developed previously by the author.

If the final result is not truly innovative and if the gameplay is a bit repetitive after a while, Rodent Tree Jump is fun to play, easy to get into and challenging. With its very good graphics and animations, Rodent Tree Jump really deserves a try.

Bee Commando

Categories: Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online    - September 11, 2006

Bee CommandoBee CommandoBee Commando is the latest game released today by Martijn Kunst, the author of the famous Base Jumping. In this sequel to Bee Boxing, you will have to struggle again with a tribe of purple bees invading Central Park!

Bee Commando is both a strategy and an action game, though, slightly more on the action side: drag and drop your bees during the turn-based phase to strengthen your weakest armies and then start a battle!

During the battle phase, aim at your opponent’s hive and hold down the mouse button to launch an attack. The goal here is to destroy your enemies hive before they destroy yours! Hold down your mouse button while moving backwards to use your shield and protect your own hive. Using your shield will both inflict damage to your opponents and block their attack. Check your health bar and your opponent’s one and launch your attacks wisely. Using the falling power-ups definitely helps!

Once you have defeated all your opponent’s armies, you will have to defeat the Queen.

If winning the first campaign is easy, a second one, much more difficult, is waiting for you. With only four armies against five for your opponent and stronger enemies, you will have to manage your battles very carefully if you want to dominate your little World.

If the turn-based phase looks a bit too simplistic, the mix between strategy and action adds a lot of fun to the original concept. Graphics and sounds are great, and overall, Bee Commando is more entertaining than Bee Boxing. Expect between 15 and 20 minutes to finish the game.

Base Jumping

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Sports   8 comments - July 4, 2006

Base JumpingBase JumpingBase jumping is a quite dangerous sport using a parachute to jump from buildings, bridges, or natural formations like cliffs. Base jumping is also the latest game developed by Martijn Kunst. Released in April, the game became an instant hit in the online gamers community.

The object is to progress through five different leagues by defeating other base jumpers in a three-round competition! Try to be the quickest to jump when the “Go” appears and then try to deploy your parachute just on time to be the fastest on the ground. Use the space bar to jump and press again on the space bar to open your parachute.

If you deploy your parachute a bit too late, you will be injured. Check the health-meter at the top of the game’s window and don’t let it be “all red or you’ll be all dead”! Buy some med kits between two leagues and eventually defeat the King to become the best Base Jumper.

Base Jumping is so simple to get into that the game is accessible to all ages. Graphics and animations are all nicely polished and pleasing for the eye. The sound effects are also well suited to the game and the music is very relaxing. The simplest games are often the best ones: Base Jumping is one of those games!
