PacMan

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   3 comments - September 1, 2006

PacManPacManPacMan is a very popular arcade game if not the one that “started it all”. Created by Tohru Iwatani for Namco, it was released in Japan in 1979 and became an instant hit.

A few of us know that the hero was first named “PuckMan” evidently due to his shape. However, before its release in the United States, the title was changed to “PacMan” because PuckMan was an easy target for vandals to convert into a vulgarity.

This Flash version of PacMan was developed by Paul Neave in 2004 and is so far the closest version from the original. So close that the game is no longer available on Neave’s website “due to legal constraints surrounding its misuse of Namco’s trademark and copyright”.

Luckily, the game spread everywhere on the Web, and it can be easily found in many portals. Meet “Blinky”, “Pinky”, “Inkey” (original name “Inky”) and “Clyde” in this near-perfect adaptation! Have fun!

Bubble Islands

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   13 comments - February 1, 2007

Bubble IslandsBubble IslandsBubble Islands is a new retro-style arcade/puzzle game launched two days ago by dot-invasion, a Swiss design/entertainment studio created in 2005 by Alexandre Renevey.

Bubble Islands is strongly inspired by Puyo Puyo, a game developed in 1991 by the Japanese company Compile.

The version currently online at the time of writing is a finalist of the 2007 IGF Festival in the Best Web Browser Game category. The game isn’t finished yet but is already playable!

Two different modes are available: the arcade mode and the puzzle mode.

Bubble IslandsThe object of the game in the arcade mode is to defeat each of your opponents in a duel by filling their grid up to the top with parasites. To do so, connect at least 4 bubbles of the same color to make them disappear. The faster you connect your bubbles, the better.

In the puzzle mode, your goal is to remove ALL the bubbles from each of the 10 islands in each level. Once you’ve completed a level, the next one is unlocked.

Move your character with the arrow keys and press the space bar to drop your bubbles and to switch them as well while falling.

I spent almost two hours playing with this game today, and overall, if the concept of Bubble Islands is not really innovative, the game is amazingly fun and addictive. The eye candy graphics and the animations are impressive, the different characters are really cute, and the game offers many challenges and a great replay value, thanks to the two game modes available and to the special characters that you can unlock and use once all the others defeated.

And wait, there is more to come. As mentioned above, the game isn’t finished yet and a new version should be released soon, with a multiplayer mode, hi-scores and a puzzle submission option! We are really looking forward to the final version!

Have fun!

Gamma Bros.

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   2 comments - June 30, 2006

Gamma Bros.Gamma Bros.Gamma Bros. is a brand new space shooter and the second game created by Miles Tilmann and Richard Grillotti from PiXelJAM games.

“The Gamma Brothers spend their days working in a huge space station near Jupiter. What could they possibly be working on? Something very important, no doubt.

The Gamma Brothers also understand the importance of not working. Every day at quitting time they hop into their commuter vehicles for the long, difficult journey back to earth. Every day, to and from work, they must survive many vicious and clever alien attacks!

Gamma Bros.It is up to YOU to guide the Gamma Brothers home. Prepare yourself for the ultimate space commute battle!”

First, chose one of the two brothers to pilot your spaceship. Use the arrow keys to move. Use ‘A’,’W’,’S’,’D’ keys to fire and press space bar to pause the game. You can reconfigure the control keys under the game’s info section, which is really helpful for all these players who don’t use a QWERTY keyboard!

Defeat enemy waves and collect coins and power ups. Buy new power ups from the flying salesman coming up from time to time and defeat the different bosses before going back home!

For their second game, the authors did a great job: graphics fit very excellently the retro-like Galaxian theme, animations are very fluid and the music is always quiet and relaxing. The game is intense and really addictive and the increase of difficulty is very well managed throughout the three different levels.

With Gamma Bros., PiXelJAM has launched a really exciting and fun game reminding us that graphics aren’t everything. Great!

Have fun!

Update: a download version of Gamma Bros. for both Mac and Pc is also available for free!

Motherload

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   30 comments - June 14, 2006

MotherloadMotherloadXGen Studios has released Motherload in September 2004. This Flash game is reminiscent of the Golden Age arcade games genre started in 1982 by Dig Dug and followed by Boulder Dash two years later.

The object of the game is to use a mining machine given to you by your new employer, Mr. Natas, and start digging the dangerous planet of Mars, looking for the Motherload, a fable cache of rare and valuable minerals. Your first job is to collect minerals and bring them to the surface for selling. The deeper your dig, the more valuable the minerals you’ll encounter.

Control your pod with the arrow keys. Your drill will deploy automatically if you move into minerals beside or below your pod; it’s not possible to drill straight up.

You will find on the surface of Mars everything you need to manage and upgrade your mining pod: a fuel station, a shop to sell your minerals, a junk shop to upgrade your pod, an emendation station to buy special items and repair your pod. There is also a very useful save game station (you will have to create your account if you play Motherload on Xgen Sudios website).

If graphics could have been better and if the music can get a bit annoying after a while (you can control both music and sounds levels in the options), Motherload is highly addictive and gamers can play this game for hours! You’re forewarned!

Have fun!

Robot Wants Fishy is the third installment in the Robot Wants series, a retro sci-fi platformer where you gradually gain abilities letting you explore more of the space station until you finally catch a fish.

“You’ll have to collect a variety of power-ups to get there, and there seem to be a few hundred aliens also standing in your way.

Each time you get blown up, your time increases by 10 seconds, so try to catch Fishy as fast as you can!”

Endeavor is a platform game created by Zillix “about a dwarf trying to uncover an ancient secret. Or maybe it’s about exploring, climbing, and swimming. Or perhaps it’s about collecting powerups and treasure. Or possibly it’s just about killing things.”

With multiple endings, quests, interactive npcs and ambient critters, Endeavor has everything to become a quite popular game: it features many original musical tracks, several upgrades, and a unique climbing and endurance scheme.

Mega Miner is a Motherload-like game developed by Alillm.

“Mine minerals and sell them for cash. Upgrade your equipment to dig deeper and find rarer ores.

Complete missions to earn extra money.”

I will take you a couple of hours to complete all the missions, assuming you make a good use of teleporters.

Addictive game, but quite repetitive after a while.

Bubble Spinner

Bubble SPinnerBubble SpinnerBubble Spinner is a fun variation of the popular Bust-A-Move game. The objective here is to clear each level by using a bubble launcher. Shoot the colored bubbles to link 3 or more of the same color and make them disappear from the board.

Bubbles are attached to a rotative platform. Each time you shoot a bubble, the platform rotates in the direction you shot. Let a bubble hits a border of the game window and it’s game over!

A nice and addictive 15 minute-diversion!

Pedro and the 100 Year Quest

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Platform, Puzzle   17 comments - February 17, 2011

Pedro and the 100 Year Quest is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer that will remind you of the Robot Wants series.

“Your boss has sent you into the basement to collect lost back issues of Boys’ Life, only as you go around, he’ll find lots of other jobs he’d be happy to see you do.

But the 100-year anniversary party is starting in 40 minutes, and they need to show off those issues… how much can you get done before it’s too late?

There are also secret codes in the game that you can find in Boys’ Life magazine to gain some very nice bonuses.”

I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this one will be rated 4+ stars!

SintaSintaFrom Kaiparasoft, the company behind Ninjakiwi founded by the Harris brothers (Bloons world), here is Sinta: Escape from Ixerron Keep, a cute platformer.

“With you trusty bow and arrow in hand, make your way through dozens of fun and action packed levels from Ixerron Keep. Collect magic items, find hidden rooms, and slay the villainous wizard himself.

Use arrow keys or W,A,S,D to move, pressing UP or W to open doors or activate switches. Use your mouse to aim the bow and click to shoot. Gather more stars for more points, and keep lives intact for even more points. If you run out of lives you can continue the game from the great hall. The game saves your last games progress so you can play over several sessions if you like.”

A level editor is expected to be launched soon. My kids love this one!
