Here’s a guide to the hot spots. I’ve also provided a few translations in caps, in case it helps. (I don’t read Japanese, though, so don’t ask me what the story is.) I did figure out the curtains, though! Thanks for the hints, everyone. I couldn’t have done it without you.

The buttons on the start screen say “FROM THE START” and “CONTINUE.” Obviously, you can’t click on the second one if you don’t have a saved game.
Here’s what you can find on your first scan around the room. Show

Exit wall: The double doors are locked. Bet you already knew that. Next to them is a small red door. It’s MISSING A LEVER. Then there’s a China cabinet. You can click on the top (locked with a keypad) or the bottom (two drawers and a pair of doors). You can’t open the bottom of the cabinet because THE DOORS FIT TOGETHER WRONG.
Sofa wall: Go to the window and you can open and close the curtains. There’s something written on the back of the right one: LEFT SAUCER.
Behind the flowers is a balance. You can click on the top, where you probably need to put two objects, or the bottom, which has a locked drawer.
The coffee table and sofa both have zoomed views. Click on the left side of the sofa to get a blank paper. Next to the sofa is a table with an electric kettle (the yellow and white thing) and a cup. Look inside the cup, at the top of the kettle (it opens), and at the bottom right of the kettle (it needs a cord). Click between the sofa and the table to see an outlet.
Second room wall: There’s a door that’s already open! (Took me a while to find this, because I didn’t think to try the door without a key.) On the right there’s a stained glass window. Look at it carefully. There’s a spot that DOES NOT CONTAIN GLASS. Clicking anywhere near the plant gives you a view of the corner. There’s a vanity here (I’ll cover it on the next wall) and you can lift up the corner of the rug to reveal a safe with four buttons. The other corner has the flowers and window that we already examined.
Fireplace wall: On the right side is a vanity with a locked drawer. From this view, click the right side to find a slot and a place to enter a password, once you’ve put a card in the slot. Also check the mirror on the vanity.
On the left side of the wall is a short chest with two drawers. The top one has a place to enter a password; the bottom one is locked.
Click on the big plant next to the fireplace and move it aside to find a bottle. It’s hard to tell, but it contains water.
Behind the picture of the parrot is what looks like an ad. This opens another window. Look at this window. The box in the lower left of the graphic opens a Japanese site. Click anywhere else on the graphic until you get results. Patience may be required.
Second room: There’s a mannequin in a dress with three hot spots: the head, the bottom of the dress (lift it up), and the floor between the mannequin and the mirror (THERE’S AN IMPRESSION OF SOMETHING).
Turning left, you find a picture of a flower. There’s an additional view on either side of the picture. On the left side, THE HINGE IS SLIGHTLY BENT.
Turning right from the mannequin, there’s another window with curtains you can open and close. It’s obscured by the text window, but on the bottom of the left one there’s another message: RIGHT CUP.

This was exhausting, so I’m going to come back later and finish the parts about where to look as you open things.

  Inside the top of the china cabinet, behind some plates, is a cord. You’ll be needing this cord a lot. If you can’t figure out what to do, try plugging something in and using every object in your inventory with it.
  The tiara contains a clue; examine it closely. This leads you to a mat (silverish rectangular object). It’s not obvious what it’s used for, but try it with things.
  In the floor safe is an amber-colored object: A PIECE OF GLASS. IT HAS A BEAUTIFUL COLOR. This will eventually open up a new hotspot in the China cabinet.
  When you put the tiara on the mannequin and the glass shoes on the indentations in the carpet (second room), THERE IS A NOISE UNDER THE DRESS.
