Plants Vs Zombies?
Gamezebo
“…From the folks who brought us Peggle, Insaniquarium, Chuzzle and Bookworm Adventures comes – get this – a game about plants. Tough plants. Plants so tough they can stop hoards of nasty zombies from terrorizing the neighborhood. Plants vs. Zombies is a quirky Tower Defense-style game of wits that might look like a cakewalk, but proves to be as challenging as it is fun.
The premise of the game is as follows: A relentless gang of the undead are trying to cross your lawn and make their way into your house. Why? To eat your brains, of course. In order for you to stop them, you must plant a number of flowers, bushes, trees and other foliage that can take down these zombies in a number of humorous ways: decapitating them, blowing them into black powder (think Daffy Duck) or running over them with a lawnmower…
…Along with the 50 main levels in the Adventure game, Plants vs. Zombies also includes unlockable secondary modes (we don’t want to ruin them for you by dishing out details) and 20 mini-games (ranging from a slot machine theme to lawn bowling-themed tower defense gameplay). Suffice it to say there is plenty of replayability here…
…All in all, we give two green thumbs up to PopCap’s irresistibly charming and challenging game.”
JayisGames
“…Plants vs. Zombies is the strangest, most original game from PopCap yet…
…You play the part of a home-owner in the midst of a typical zombie apocalypse, but exaggerated to a cartoon fever pitch. Beyond the suit-wearing regular zombies, you’ll face zombies in football gear, zombies on pogo sticks, pole-vaulting zombies, and many more. The undead starving hordes are on the march, but your back yard is standing in the way, covered with fresh, fertilized topsoil. By planting various types of seeds, you must raise a crop of warrior vegetation that can defend your brains from the imminent devouring…
…There are 50 levels in the main Adventure Mode, spread across five different settings and about seven hours of gameplay. Each area requires a slightly different approach. At night-time, for example, you’ll need to deploy bargain-price mushrooms to offset the lack of sunlight. In the pool, you’ll need to support your plants on lily pads…
… Without a doubt, this is one of the defining casual games of this generation. If you’re a fan of Insaniquarium or Farm Frenzy, this is a no-BRAAAAIIINer (sorry), but there is enough quirky appeal in this title to seduce practically anyone. PopCap proves that following a goofy idea to ridiculous extremes can be a winning proposition. There won’t be any Plants vs. Zombies clones, because you could never copy its force of personality. Highly recommended.”
The Escapist
“…Everything about Plants vs. Zombies is high-quality, start to finish; the music is excellent, the art is charming and adorable, and the game’s sense of humor will really have you grinning. The notes the zombies leave are priceless, and even their descriptions in the Almanac are hilarious. Plants vs. Zombies is fun in concentrated form, an intense dose of giggle-inducing entertainment beamed directly to your brain.”

Virtual Families is the latest virtual life simulation game released by Last Day of Work, the team behind the very popular Virtual Villagers series, Plant Tycoon and Fish Tycoon.
In the game, players adopt a character who then begins a life: choosing if they want to marry, deciding whether to have children, furthering their career, all with the help and guidance of the player.
Virtual Families focuses on the true aspects that make a family unique, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, displaying life in all its drama and glory.
Virtual Families runs in true real-time, meaning that when the player’s computer is shut off, the game continues to progress, with the family members evolving and growing, based on what the player has taught them, even when no one is interacting with them. The game is set in bucolic suburbia and features a gorgeous hand-drawn scrolling map with a house and garden. It employs sophisticated artificial-intelligence and a varied selection of characters with quirky personalities to adopt and take care of.
There are various hurdles that appear throughout Virtual Families, from moral dilemmas – including whether or not to keep a package that was inadvertently delivered to your home, or if you should send your daughter to Paris for a modeling contract – to real-life situations such as illness, allergies, promotions and chores. Also included along the way are mini-puzzles, where family members have to find hidden objects throughout their home and garden, and trophies that can be acquired after reaching various goals throughout their journey.
- Runs in true real-time.
- Unique and fascinating adoptees from 1000’s of combinations.
- Fully trainable people: shape/adapt their personalities through praising and scolding!
- Dynamic illness system. Play doctor!
- Over 100 trophies.
- Hidden puzzles around the house.
- Email ‘events’ and other random, unpredictable occurrences.
- Weather, day/night cycles (synchronized to the player’s system clock, so it is nighttime in the game when it is nighttime where you are).
What others have said about
Virtual Families?
Casualicious
“…In my opinion, Virtual Families is simply an enhanced version on what Virtual Villagers had left at. The game still has secrets you need to unravel aside from the usual collectibles and trophies you can collect as you progress through the game. Relationships are given more importance in this release too, since you’ll really have to expand your family to keep enhancing your gameplay. And like its predecessor, turning off your computer will still simulate a living family, therefore pressing the need for you to check on them from time to time.
One downside though is how slow-paced the game is on its first few parts. It’s quite a disappointment that you can’t fast forward the gameplay whenever your characters are sleeping, leaving you with nothing to do until they wake up. I guess the game is not really meant to be played in a continuous basis, instead just to check on it whenever you have some time to spare on playing.
All in all though, with its many objectives and in-game secrets, Virtual Families is really a game worth buying. It doesn’t only ensure you hours of fun, but even unlimited days of playtime as you build families generation after generation.”

“If you were a professional game reviewer, naturally you’d want to bestow high marks on a deep and ambitious game. But what would you do if that game wasn’t finished? If it were laden with many technical and graphical issues that marred the experience? And what if it were an unoriginal concept?
Such is the case with Virtual Families, the latest from developer Last Day of Work (of Virtual Villagers fame), and while we had fun with this The Sims-esque game, we also grew frustrated with its lack of polish and innovation…
…I don’t think I’ve ever been more torn while reviewing a game than I am with Virtual Families. On one hand it takes an existing and proven concept — “borrowing” the virtual life elements of The Sims, the best-selling computer game in history — and adding a real-time element, trophies and other goodies. But at the same time the game just feels unfinished, primarily due to the aforementioned A.I. issues.
Fans of this genre, though, or of LDW’s Virtual Villagers or Fish Tycoon games, should at the very least download the game to try it for free before deciding if this is a (virtual) life worth living.”

Diaper Dash?

“Diaper changes, feedings, crying babies… does it ever end? Not if you’re playing Diaper Dash. The newest time management game from PlayFirst and developer Zemnott will charm with all the baby and toddler-filled cuteness you could ever imagine, while coming up a bit light in the challenge department.
In Diaper Dash you’ll meet Wilson, a tender-hearted scientist and inventor who works for Rubber Ducky, Inc., a subsidiary of BigCorp., which is owned by the rotten Mr. Big. Wilson breaks the rules by picking up a crying test subject and is immediately fired. Unemployed and depressed, Wilson visits Flo, the popular waitress of Dinertown who always has great advice…
…Diaper Dash offers two modes of gameplay. Career takes you through 50 levels from basement to mansion, with each level requiring a specific amount of money earned to progress or master. Endless Day is played in easy, medium or hard modes allowing you to play non-stop until five babies have left unhappy. In Career Mode, there are more than 20 upgrades available for strategic purchases such as Stain free carpet or the Auto rocking sleeper…
… Luckily, the game offers an Endless Day mode, which gives it the re-playability needed to make this game worth the price. As well, the characters are delightful and fans of earlier Dash games will love seeing the children of their favorite Dinertown residents.”
Casualicious
“Just when you thought that day care centers had it easy just taking care of babies all day, Diaper Dash shows exactly how a fast-growing day care business often can’t be run by a single man alone. With this, we welcome the latest Dash time management game as a new citizen of Dinertown named Wilson makes his business debut by running his very own automated day care center…
…The idea behind Diaper Dash is just the same as all of the other Dash games. Your task as Wilson is to take care of dropped babies and tend to their needs like feeding, napping, playing and even changing their diapers. You earn more money depending on how happy each baby becomes before they are picked by their parents, and of course, all the money goes to the upgrade and expansion of the center afterwards…
…All in all, Diaper Dash has a very addictive game play, and very challenging too when Wilson’s day care center finally attracts more customers. The game also includes several surprises up its sleeve to put the players at the edge of their seats, like special days wherein you’re only going to serve girl babies, and another day where you won’t be able to use Wilson’s inventions to help you out…”

What others have said about
Emerald City Confidential?
Gamezebo
“Like the novel Wicked did before it, Emerald City Confidential takes the familiar people and places of Oz but spins its own unique story around them. Our main character is Petra, a young detective trying to make ends meet under a growing stack of bills, and facing an uphill battle against widespread corruption, mob bosses, smugglers, and crooked lawyers (including one “C. Lion,” who nearly sends her to her death off a bridge after she comes a little too close to exposing his operation)…
…Emerald City Confidential is a point-and-click adventure, which means you progress through the game by talking to people to figure out what to do next, picking up items and using them to solve puzzles, and exploring the Emerald City and surrounding countryside….
…As someone who has been following the development of this game since it was simply known as “the secret PlayFirst project,” it’s great to see it live up to expectations. To sum it up, Emerald City Confidential is a polished, creative and clever must-have for adventure game fans.”
JayisGames
“Point and click adventure games will never die, thanks in part to the efforts of Wadjet Eye Games, creator of the Blackwell series, The Shivah, and now, Emerald City Confidential. In the studio’s latest title you are cast in the role of Petra, a young private eye trying to make a living in the strange Wizard of Oz-inspired world known as Emerald City. The hand drawn artwork is utterly captivating, the storytelling and writing top-notch, and the game itself is a package you won’t be able to tear yourself away from…
…The artwork and story are what make this game truly shine, and the depth of which both burrow is impressive. Every location, every character, and every relationship in the game is steeped in mystery. Beyond the game’s well-integrated puzzles, you’ll also have to put together bits of story lines to make everything fit, a sort of meta-puzzle that takes place outside of the confines of the game…
…Beautiful, intriguing, well-thought-out, and put together so perfectly you’d swear it fell off the awesome tree, Emerald City Confidential is a stunning adventure game anyone — even non-adventure fans — can really get into.”

Cooking Academy 2: World Cuisine?
Gamezebo
“Looking to spice up your menu plan? Cooking Academy 2 is basically a huge collection of cooking-themed minigames that might actually give you some inspiration in the kitchen. It’s not an original concept, but it’s still fun to play.
The story picks up where the last game left off. As a budding chef, you’re privileged to attend the Annual World Culinary Workshop. The student who scores the highest on the qualifying exams at the end of the workshop will receive 1 million dollars from the World Culinary Board to start their own restaurant, so you better get cooking…
… The graphics are improved over the first Cooking Academy, and with a few exceptions (like solid orange colored almonds), they are generally pretty good and very clear. The music is suitable for the background, and changes to match the theme of each restaurant, which is also pretty cool…
…If you’re a foodie, or you if like to cook, there should be plenty in Cooking Academy 2 to keep you busy. It’s not as challenging as the Hot Dish games, but you will need to replay boards frequently if you want all expert scores. As a bonus, you’ll learn some interesting things about a bunch of ethnic dishes, and maybe get a few ideas to use in the real world.”
Gamemile
“Fugazo Games have released the second part of their hit Cooking Academy, and the sequel preserves all the great features of the original game. Delicious food to cook, lots of information on various world cuisines and addictive simulation game play – all this makes Cooking Academy 2: World Cuisine a perfect choice for action gamers…
…The graphics are great – nothing more to say, you have to see it by your own eyes. And the music, changing from stage to stage to match the national environment, creates a nice background.
So, if you are ready to test your culinary skills and maybe even find something to use in your everyday kitchen life – it’s time to attend Cooking Academy 2: World Cuisine!”
