“It’s a shame that the Wild West isn’t a more popular setting in video games. If Hollywood and Louis L’Amor are to be believed, this was the era when cowboys had the same sense of honor as Knights of the Round Table, gunfights were used to settle disputes, and gorgeous steam trains were the way to get around. It was a period of romance and adventure, when the nation was still young and the possibilities seemed endless. Thankfully, the Westward series of games have done the setting proud, and the newly-released Westward IV: All Aboard continues the tradition…
…Westward IV is an adventure/strategy game that has players using a single character to repair and build structures, as well as fight off bandits, and recruit citizens to work for them. It’s a strange play mechanic if you’re unfamiliar with the Westward series; one that takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of things, this style is certainly intriguing…
…The story is actually rather interesting and engaging, once you manage to get into it. The Turner family is a quirky bunch, but they’re also extremely likable. It takes a little while for the characters’ personality to really become noticeable, but you’ll be surprised at how invested you become in Anne and Henry’s tandem quests…
…Westward IV: All Aboard is a great strategy adventure that is a lot of fun, provided you can slog through the first hour or so of play. If you’re able to do this, you’re in for what is one of the most charming strategy games to come along in a while, and will find yourself madly in love with soon afterwards.”
It Expressions
“While the previous editions of Westward were great, Westward IV All Aboard really takes a step forward over Westward 3, with improved graphics and engaging game play. Westward IV All Aboard is a game that will challenge you in a entertaining way and keep you amused with hilarious dialog and many quests…
…The Westward series are Sandlot games, so you can be sure that the quality is first class and the challenge just about right. Westward IV All Aboard is a fairly complex strategy game that offers you many choices at every stage of gameplay, which in turn brings fabulous replay value, giving you months of serious game play. There are 75 quests and with different strategy, the outcomes will be different.
Westward 4 All Aboard is highly recommended for anyone who likes sim games, but if you have never played any of the Westward series, start out by trying the original Westward to get the hang of things. Remember, the series has come along way since Sandlot made the original, so you are in for a real treat with Westward IV All Aboard. “

“Aveyond: Gates of Night is the direct follow-up to Aveyond: Lord of Twilight, and the second episode in the new format since Amaranth Games decided to go episodic with its popular casual role-playing game series instead of releasing one giant 50-hour epic. Offering about 10 hours of gameplay, Gates of Night feels more solid and fleshed out than its predecessor and makes for an even more enjoyable adventure.
Gates of Night continues the story of Mel, a young thief whose unique position as a descendent of the person who created the powerful Orb of Twilight puts her at odds with an evil vampire named Gyendal, who plans to use her to plunge the world into eternal darkness. During the events of Aveyond: Lord of Twilight, Mel studies to be a spy at the School of War and Magic, meets several companions, and begins a search for another of her ancestor’s powerful artifacts – the Orb of Light – which might be able to defeat Gyendal. In Gates of Night Mel and her companions search for four quarter keys to unlock the next portion of the journey…
…Lord of Twilight was a decent introduction to the episodic format, but with Gates of Night the series really feels like it’s hit its stride. There were some lose ends in Lord of Twilight, like quests that couldn’t be complete, and areas that were visible but couldn’t be accessed, that Gates of Night takes care of. The result is a more satisfying and full experience.”

Two hundred years later, young Mel, a common street thief, is about to have her life turned upside down, as another stands determined to succeed where Darkthrop failed, and to see the prophecy to its fulfillment.

Stop an evil vampire lord from plunging the world into darkness and enslaving humanity. Explore lush tropical forests, arid deserts, mystical woodlands and more. Soar to dizzying heights and descend to the depths of the Underworld on your adventure.
- Great story.

Aveyond: Lord of Twilight?

“Shortly before the release of the title everyone was calling Aveyond 3, developer Amaranth Games announced a change of strategy: Instead of the latest game in the Aveyond series being a sprawling 50-hour role-playing adventure like its two predecessors, it would instead be released as several smaller “episodes” offering about 10 hours of playtime each. The first such episode is Aveyond: Lord of Twilight.
Other than the length (and let’s face it, 10 hours is still pretty darned impressive – especially by casual game standards) and the fact that a couple of quests carry over into the next game, Lord of Twilight is the same kind of game that Aveyond fans have come to know and love…
..The 2-D graphical style is typical of other casual RPGs and classics like the early Final Fantasy games. You’ll explore various towns and the surrounding countryside, which includes forests, mountains, bog, and even snowy terrain. Along the way you’ll talk to people to gain clues and side quests, discover treasure and purchase equipment, and have other like-minded adventurers join your party…
…Amaranth Games has hit on something wonderful with Aveyond, and I’m impressed not only at how willing the studio is to keep adding small refinements and tweaks to make gameplay even better (such as adding mouse support and an autosave), but how rich the community is by offering maps, downloadable “goodies” and other fun stuff to players.
Like its predecessors, Aveyond: Lord of Twilight is a casual RPG that offers hours of enjoyment. True, it’s not quite long or deep as the first games, but if you’re worried about whether you’re still getting enough bang for your buck, you can put those worries to rest.”

Virtual Families is the latest virtual life simulation game released by Last Day of Work, the team behind the very popular Virtual Villagers series, Plant Tycoon and Fish Tycoon.
In the game, players adopt a character who then begins a life: choosing if they want to marry, deciding whether to have children, furthering their career, all with the help and guidance of the player.
Virtual Families focuses on the true aspects that make a family unique, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, displaying life in all its drama and glory.
Virtual Families runs in true real-time, meaning that when the player’s computer is shut off, the game continues to progress, with the family members evolving and growing, based on what the player has taught them, even when no one is interacting with them. The game is set in bucolic suburbia and features a gorgeous hand-drawn scrolling map with a house and garden. It employs sophisticated artificial-intelligence and a varied selection of characters with quirky personalities to adopt and take care of.
There are various hurdles that appear throughout Virtual Families, from moral dilemmas – including whether or not to keep a package that was inadvertently delivered to your home, or if you should send your daughter to Paris for a modeling contract – to real-life situations such as illness, allergies, promotions and chores. Also included along the way are mini-puzzles, where family members have to find hidden objects throughout their home and garden, and trophies that can be acquired after reaching various goals throughout their journey.
- Runs in true real-time.
- Unique and fascinating adoptees from 1000’s of combinations.
- Fully trainable people: shape/adapt their personalities through praising and scolding!
- Dynamic illness system. Play doctor!
- Over 100 trophies.
- Hidden puzzles around the house.
- Email ‘events’ and other random, unpredictable occurrences.
- Weather, day/night cycles (synchronized to the player’s system clock, so it is nighttime in the game when it is nighttime where you are).
What others have said about
Virtual Families?
Casualicious
“…In my opinion, Virtual Families is simply an enhanced version on what Virtual Villagers had left at. The game still has secrets you need to unravel aside from the usual collectibles and trophies you can collect as you progress through the game. Relationships are given more importance in this release too, since you’ll really have to expand your family to keep enhancing your gameplay. And like its predecessor, turning off your computer will still simulate a living family, therefore pressing the need for you to check on them from time to time.
One downside though is how slow-paced the game is on its first few parts. It’s quite a disappointment that you can’t fast forward the gameplay whenever your characters are sleeping, leaving you with nothing to do until they wake up. I guess the game is not really meant to be played in a continuous basis, instead just to check on it whenever you have some time to spare on playing.
All in all though, with its many objectives and in-game secrets, Virtual Families is really a game worth buying. It doesn’t only ensure you hours of fun, but even unlimited days of playtime as you build families generation after generation.”

“If you were a professional game reviewer, naturally you’d want to bestow high marks on a deep and ambitious game. But what would you do if that game wasn’t finished? If it were laden with many technical and graphical issues that marred the experience? And what if it were an unoriginal concept?
Such is the case with Virtual Families, the latest from developer Last Day of Work (of Virtual Villagers fame), and while we had fun with this The Sims-esque game, we also grew frustrated with its lack of polish and innovation…
…I don’t think I’ve ever been more torn while reviewing a game than I am with Virtual Families. On one hand it takes an existing and proven concept — “borrowing” the virtual life elements of The Sims, the best-selling computer game in history — and adding a real-time element, trophies and other goodies. But at the same time the game just feels unfinished, primarily due to the aforementioned A.I. issues.
Fans of this genre, though, or of LDW’s Virtual Villagers or Fish Tycoon games, should at the very least download the game to try it for free before deciding if this is a (virtual) life worth living.”
