Tetris

TetrisTetrisI thought last Monday that it was a shame that I haven’t had a Tetris game already reviewed in Freegamesnews until now. After a couple of days spent to dig everywhere, here is what I would consider so far to be the best implementation available online for free.

As I guess it is totally useless to remind you what the Tetris rules are, let’s just mention that this puzzle game was invented in 1985 by Alexey Pazhitov while he was working for the Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

The Miniclip version of Tetris has everything you could expect. It includes several settings, such as difficulty (set the slow down speed, the start lines and the number of lines to complete for each stage), or rotation, clockwise or counter clockwise.

The global design of the game is almost perfect, the blocks animations run smoothly and the control keys are the same as the original ones: left and right arrow key to move blocks, up to rotate, down to drop slowly and space bar to quick drop.

On the downside, the electronic music is a bit annoying after a while; however, it can be easily turned off in the options menu. Another complaint would be the addition of a new “erasing” brick which wipes out all the existing ones. It doesn’t help very much and this particular implementation is nothing else but a violation of the Tetris tradition, not to mention the special bricks also available in the settings.

That being said, it is always a pleasure to spend ten minutes (or more) playing Tetris. That’s probably why Tetris consistently appears on lists of greatest video games of all time! Have fun!

Kyobi

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Physics, Puzzle   1 comment - April 2, 2009

KyobiKyobiKyobi is a new physics-based puzzle game from Photon Storm that is best described as a cross between Columns, Tetris and a Match-3, but with a “big fat dose of physics thrown in for good measure.

As the blocks drop you can grab them with the mouse, and fling them around. Match 3 or more of the same colour and they all explode in a shower of particles.

Throw them together with real force and you’ll shake the screen and score bigger points. Chain combos can be obtained by smashing lots of colors one after the other within a set time.”

“I am really pleased with how this game plays. I spent a lot of evenings working on tweaking the difficulty, so the first 20 levels guide you through the game. The pace ebbs and flows gracefully. After a really hectic level with 6 blocks falling every couple of seconds, the next level can often be far more sedate with a slow trickle to give you a breather” the author said.

Kyobi features 40 levels in total and becomes addictive very quickly. Some players may find the gameplay repetitive after a while, but all in all, I love this game!

Sirtet

Categories: Action, Free, Games, Puzzle   1 comment - February 4, 2009

SirtetSirtetSirtet is another variation on Tetris developed by Guilherme Töws based on an original idea by David Friedman.

The object of the game is to form tetraminoes (the four-piece group that you’re familiar with in Tetris) out of the falling blocks.

Press the left and right arrow keys to move the falling block(s) to the sides. Press down key to drop the lowermost falling block. If you place five or more blocks together, they will turn into gray immovable blocks! Try to destroy tetraminoes next to them to erode them.

If you like challenging Tetris variations, give Sirtet a try!

99 Bricks

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Skill   6 comments - November 15, 2008

99 BricksIn 99 Bricks, your goal is to stack 99 tetrominoes to build the highest possible tower, taking into account the physics of building such a structure from Tetris blocks. Fortunately for your quest for height, a completed line does not delete it, as it would in A. Pajitnov’s game. How high will your tower be? Have fun!

Under Construction

Under ConstructionUnder ConstructionUnder Construction in a new puzzle game in which your goal is to build towers using colorful Tetris blocks.

Meet building goals in each level and win bonus “color match” points for matching 2 or more blocks of the same color.

If you get stuck, use the limited ‘Sledge Hammer’ or ‘Cement’ power ups. Click a block to pick it up and place it on the grid. Click when off the grid or press the spacebar to rotate the pieces.

Try to not leave any empty holes.  Get rid of a block you’ve picked up by dropping it in the green bin.

My only grip with Under Construction is that the difficulty ramps up very slowly:  I wouldn’t recommend this game for a short break!

HDOS Databank Request 01HDOS Databank Request 01Found on Indie Games: HDOS Databank Request 01 “is basically a remake of Tetris Attack’s Puzzle Mode, where blocks are removed by arranging three or more matching blocks in horizontal or vertical lines.

This is achieved by swapping two blocks at a time, but be mindful that the number of moves allowed per stage is always limited.”

The game from Game Reclaim features 35 levels of increasing difficulty and you will have to plan things very carefully in later levels…

Nice and challenging!

Railz

Categories: 5 minute, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   11 comments - December 6, 2007

RailzRailzRailz is a unique puzzle Flash game where the objective is to complete a loop with the provided railway tracks. Railz does not contain any levels, which makes it much different from other flash games I have played. Instead, Railz replaces the level concept by providing the player with 60 moves to make before the game ends. Players want to try and get the highest score possible within their 60-move allotment.Players gain money by completing loops; the bigger the loop you complete, the more money you get when the game ends. Players complete loops by moving railway tracks around the board, each movement counts against your limited 60 available. There are vertical pieces, horizontal pieces and four different curved pieces, a top and bottom right curved piece and a top and bottom left curved piece.

You’ll find yourself paying close attention and thinking through because there is a slight trick to the puzzle madness. As soon as the player moves a single track piece to anywhere on the board a new piece is placed in the previous position. The more pieces you move the more cluttered your space gets. In the bottom corner you’ll be able to see the next available piece, much like the classic Tetris title so you have a chance to plan ahead.

There is yet another challenge to this puzzle to keep you coming back for a higher score. There are pieces with black money signs on them, these pieces become static and cannot be moved for the rest of the game. Once these static pieces are on the board, they are there until you complete a loop with them so you’ll constantly be challenged with creatively using these immovable pieces to create a large loop. The upside to the dollar sign pieces is they give you more money when you complete loops using them. However, you can opt to work around them and they won’t be included in your final score.

The strategy behind the game is to move a piece out of a loop that doesn’t fit there and have the waiting piece fill in the loop or, even better, complete the loop.

I really liked Railz because I was constantly challenged with increasing my score to an all time high. Without the additional difficulties of the immovable tracks I think I might tire of the game quickly, this adds a great challenge and makes you want to improve your skills constantly. The loop puzzle really exercises creative thinking without making you feel like you’re doing a job. If you are looking for a good puzzle game to pass the time, check out Railz.

Phit

PhitPhitCreated by Jeff Wofford, Phit is a puzzle game that is a mix between Tangram and Rush Hour, in which you have to fit all the Tetris-like blocks into the yellow area at the bottom of the screen.

Use your mouse to select a piece and drag it to the place you want. Note that you can’t the selected piece in the yellow area if there is another piece in its way.

Your progress through the game is automatically saved after you complete a level, so you can come back later and continue from where you left off.

Is Phit fun? Yes it is, at least for a while… And with its 9999 levels (!), this game can keep you busy for a very, very long time!

Warbears – Puzzle Mission

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   3 comments - June 26, 2007

Warbears - Puzzle MissionWarbears - Puzzle MissionThe Warbears are on their way to the location of Mission 3, but something has diverted their attention!

Puzzle Mission is a Collapse-like puzzle game  (something between Samegame and Tetris) created by Gionatan Iasio that was launched today at Warbears.com.

Here is the announcement I received in my email box earlier today:

“Puzzle Mission’ is a simple blocks style game (note: or a Samegame-like game), but with the usual Warbears twist. Cool animations, in game puzzles to knock out additional blocks, and the Warbears themselves get involved to allow you to take out the more troublesome squares. Based over 10 levels it’s highly addictive and will keep you coming back for more!

The idea is to keep the blocks as low as possible by clicking 3 (or more) blocks of the same color. A new row of blocks come up about every twenty seconds or so, as the game progresses new features and colors arise. Speed up the new rows by clicking the arrow next to the Warbear!

One of the puzzles which arises is a “?” in a black box which you then click to figure out the puzzle. Stone blocks start to come up too, but you can use the Warbears special skills to get rid of them.”

Simply click groups of 3 blocks or more of the same color to eliminate them.

All in All, Puzzle Mission is a simple and well polished puzzle game, with tons of cool animations. If you are a Samegame fan, you will enjoy Puzzle Mission. Oh, and don’t forget to register if you want to submit your score!

Porolith Flash

Categories: Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   2 comments - April 4, 2007

Porolith FlashPorolith FlashPorolith Flash is the latest action/puzzle game created by Taro Ito of Gamedesign. In this game strongly inspired from Tetris, the object is to join some blocks of the same color to make them disappear from the playfield.

The first main difference with Tetris is that you CAN’T rotate the blocks that fall from the top of the screen; the second main difference is that once in a while, blocks of a new color are introduced in the playfield, making the game more and more difficult.

If you don’t like Tetris, you won’t like Porolith Flash. But if you like Tetris, you will enjoy this game: easy to learn, hard to master, fast-paced, challenging and very addictive, Porolith Flash has all the qualities to make it a very fun and exciting game.

Koozac

Categories: 5 minute, Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   3 comments - January 5, 2007

KoozacKoozacKoozac is an action puzzle game developed by Ben Cusack, from UK. The game was nominated at the 2006 International Mobile Gaming Awards.

Koozac combines the basic principles of two super famous casual games, Sudoku and Tetris. The concept of the game is simple: position the falling blocks on top of each other to complete the number shown at the bottom left of the game window (in other words, if you need to complete a 7, stack a #3 block with a #4 block – for example – and that’s it!). If you succeed to complete a number, the corresponding blocks will disappear. 25 blocks on the board end the game.

If Koozac is really well done, it is also very difficult to master, due to the increasing speed of the falling blocks and the stack of three or four (five?) blocks required to complete later levels.

Overall, Koozac is another interesting Tetris variation, perfect if you want to burn a few neurones during a five minute break!

Have fun!
