From Beyond is a short game made in just ONE weekend, as part of the Global Game Jam 2011, by Tom and Adam Vian, the Super Flash Bros.

“As a cosmic horror from deepest space, you’re determined to wipe out all life on Earth. Launch your extra-terrestrial weapons towards an unsuspecting world, from any angle you choose.

Position the hand around the earth with the mouse, click to start aiming with the mouse, click again to launch.”

In ImmorTall, you will take a “poignant walk through the life of an alien caught in the midst of humanity”. Use your mouse or the arrow keys to move. ImmorTall is not real a game per se, and it’s also very short. But it’s really well done and definitely worth a try! Have fun!

Puzzle Bloom

Categories: 3D, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle, Unity   5 comments - November 18, 2009

Puzzle BloomPuzzle BloomPuzzle Bloom is an isometric 3D puzzle game developed with Unity by a group of students from Danish Institute DADIU, where you control “the tree spirit Canotila in her quest to bring back life to her island.

Canotila needs the assistance of the island’s native creatures to get past the rigid machines of the world. She flies from creature to creature and uses her powers to guide them.

New life will bloom into the world for each time Canotila breaks a machine, bringing Canotila closer to her ultimate goal of a return to nature.”

The concept behind Puzzle Bloom is nothing new, but the use of the Unity 3D engine brings the game to a whole new level.

So bad it’s too short, but anyway, amazing work!

Have fun!

Note: install the Unity plugin to play this game. It’s totally free like the Flash Player is, and it’s well worth the install!

Jared Riley (Hero Interactive) – Interview

Categories: Interviews   1 comment - January 6, 2008

StormWinds 1.5

StormWinds 1.5 is the latest action game created by Jared Riley and his team from Hero Interactive, the game studio behind Bubble Tanks and Starshine. StormWinds 1.5 is expected to be released in a few days at ArmorGames and Jared was kind enough to answer a few questions for FreeGamesNews readers (thanks Jared!)

FreeGamesNews: Hi Jared. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background?

Jared: Hey there! Certainly! My name is Jared Riley, I’m the founder of a little company called Hero Interactive, based in the US. I left my old job customizing accounting software in August ‘06 to start my own thing, and it’s been craziness since. I didn’t start developing non-client work for the web till about March, since then we’ve put out a lot of fun games I think, including Bubble Tanks, LightSprites, StarShine, and StormWinds.

FreeGamesNews: When did you start developing Flash games?

Jared: I actually started with Shockwave and Director while in school. I really wanted to develop some talent to get into the game design specialization the university was offering, so I bought a lot of books, got the software, and started jumping in. My first online game was Shark Bait in ShockWave back in 2003 I think, not too long ago. My first game in Flash was Alien Abduction as part of a class project.

Covert Front – Episode 1

Covert FrontCovert Front - Episode 1Here is the alert I just found in my email box today, from Mateusz Skutnik, the creator of the Submachine series:

“In Covert Front you are a top secret agent code-named Kara in an alternate history version of World War I. Assigned to infiltrate the mansion of a notorious scientist, Karl von Toten, you must discover the incredible secrets that lie within and escape with your life.

But first, you must figure out how to get through the front door! Covert Front is a point-and-click adventure game that will transport you to the center of an espionage-filled world.”

All Quiet on the Covert Front is a short and not really difficult game, but the story line and the unique atmosphere bring it to a new level. Covert Front might become a very successful series if the next episodes are as good as this one!

Have fun!

Leo Hhimura's No ExitLeo Hhimura's No ExitFound today at Life 1 Entertainment: “Whether you love them or hate them, ‘Escape the room‘ style games have become a pretty big genre on the internet.

KAZAHANA: No Exit is our little exploration into the world of these types of games, and a good excuse for Steve to get more familiar with Actionscript. Can you find the exit?”

Created by Steven Lim and Max Mao, Leo Himura’s No Exit is a short and very nicely done Room Escape game. I’m already looking forward to the sequel!

WeirdvilleWeirdvilleWeirdville is a new platform game released today by the talented team from Romania behind Gamesheep.

The object here is to use your skill to collect as many coins as you can in each level, while avoiding traps and other obstacles. Reach the red signpost to go to the next level and don’t forget to read the password for the current level on each “pass” signpost.

Use the arrow keys to move, climb or jump and press k to restart a level (and lose a life!).

Weirdville is nicely done and includes some special features like bubbles to float on water, blocks that can be moved or trampolines to perform high jumps. On the downside, the music loop is far too short and repetitive and controls could have been more polished.

Overall, Weirville is a fun game that should keep you busy for a while.

Have fun!

Lazer Trap

Categories: 5 minute, Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Skill    - November 30, 2006

Lazer TrapLazer TrapLazer Trap is little skill game strongly inspired from Jezzball, one of the most famous puzzle games of all time. Jezzball was released in 1992 as a part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack, and quickly became a hit.

The object here is to fill the playfield and trap all the enemies into the smallest possible chambers. To do so, you will have to use a pod to fire a laser beam. When the laser beam hits a wall, a part of the playfield is filled. The goal in each of the 12 levels is to fill at least 85% of the playfield. If an enemy touches the laser beam while it is being fired, then you will lose a life: if you run out of lives, the game ends.

Use your mouse to move your pod, press the space bar to change between vertical and horizontal fire position and click the left button to fire.

Easier than Jezzball due to the ability to destroy enemies, Lazer Trap is nicely done, even if the repetitious sounds can become annoying after a while. Recommended for a very short break: have fun!

I had the opportunity to chat recently with Tonypa. He took some time to answer a few questions for FreeGamesNews (thanks Tonypa).

FreeGamesNews: Could you please introduce yourself?

Tonypa: My real name has non-English letters so I use Tony :)

FreeGamesNews: Can you tell us a bit about your background?

Tonypa: I have mostly worked as newspaper/magazine designer. I learned computers at school and made animated movies too.

FreeGamesNews: For how long have you been developing Flash games?

Tonypa: Since 2000.

FreeGamesNews: How many games have you already developed?

Tonypa: No idea. Already forgot some old ones, they were not very good when I look at them now, but then of course I loved them :)
Maybe about 30…

String Avoider

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Skill   1 comment - May 28, 2006

String AvoiderString AvoiderString Avoider is a skill game where you slide a string through different mazes. As usual with this kind of games, you control the string with your mouse. What makes the game interesting is the length of your string which will give you some troubles to end most of the 26 levels.

Note that it can be shortened by pairs of scissors found in some levels or by pressing “S” at any time, but you will lose a life with this option. On the downside, there is no password system between levels, meaning you have to start over each time you quit the game.

Perfect for a five to ten minute break. Have fun!
