It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the board game Othello. When I started FreeGamesNews, my first reflex was to find a good Othello Reversi online game; I found a game called Cyrano, with a very – VERY – strong AI, that is almost impossible to beat in  master mode!

When I discovered Othexo, the latest game from Ben Leffler based on Othello, I was exited!

Ben Leffler is well known for his popular series Exmortis, but not for being a puzzle games designer. As a matter of fact, Othexo is a very good game, and the AI in hard mode with two cpu opponents is strong enough to defeat you most of the time! Or may be it’s just me…

Anyway, I love this game.

Hexxagon is one of the most popular board game of strategy, upon Othello and Ataxx. The original version was written in 1992 by Argo Games, and this Flash version was updated for the web by Paul Neave in 2003.

The idea is to take over as much of the board as you can with pieces of your own color. Whenever you move, the pieces next to yours will be converted to your color. There are two types of moves, a jump or double, indicated when your piece is selected.

Let’s face it, the graphics here are not the best you have ever seen, and the IA is not particularly strong. That being said, this version of Hexxagon is still very fun and it is easy to see why this game was so successful.

Cyrano sounds like a strange name for an Othello Reversi online game ; it was developed by Bruno Causse, a french developer who seems to have spent a lot of time to build this little but really powerful game, available on his website.

Othello is a well known 2 players 8 by 8 squares board game using 64 discs. Each disc is white on one side and black on the other. Each player chooses one color, and the goal is to have a majority of the pieces showing your color by the end of the game.

Both players take turns placing a single piece of his or her color on the board. Once a piece is played, it never moves, but it can be flipped. Specifically, each time you place a piece, you also flip some of your opponent’s pieces — those that are horizontally, vertically, or diagonally between the piece you just put down and another piece of your own color. You are required to flip at least one of your opponent’s pieces each time you make a move, otherwise you have to pass your turn. The game ends when neither player can make a legal move.

Cyrano offers different levels of difficulty, from beginner to master. It also allow you to play in Blitz mode, with 3 choices : 1, 3 and 5 minutes. Note that you’ll be able to finish the game even if your remaining time goes below 0.

Beware, Cyrano is strong, very strong, and even at the beginner level, you’ll need some practice if not days before being able to win !

With a clean interface and the legal moves option activated, Cyrano is a serious opponent for Othello games and a perfect choice in the jungle of Othello online games. Just have a look here and have fun!
