Filler 2Filler 2Filler 2 is the sequel to Filler, a very popular action puzzle game released last year by Will Hankinson from  SimianLogic.

The goal in Filler 2 remains unchanged: fill up the two-third of the screen with filler white balls while avoiding the bouncing balls. To create a filler ball, click and hold your mouse button: the ball will track your mouse pointer and will grow until you release the mouse, it hits another filler ball or it runs into a bouncing ball.

Press and hold spacebar to freeze all the bouncy balls in later levels helps a lot! Read the instructions in game before playing!

With 100 challenges, “most of which allow you to jump right into a specific game scenario” and optimized physics to support more balls on screen in higher levels, Filler 2 is better than ever!

Puzzle Boy Flash

Categories: Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   7 comments - March 25, 2008

Puzzle Boy FlashPuzzle Boy FlashPuzzle Boy Flash is a puzzle game developped by Blawars. Puzzle Boy Flash is a remake of Puzzle Boy and Kwirk, two games released in 1989/1990 for the original Game Boy.

Your goal here is to find your way to the level’s exit. The path to the exit is blocked by boxes, holes and spinning doors. Boxes can be pushed aside or into holes to make them traversable and there are different types of spinning doors.

In some levels, it is also possible (and necessary) to control several different characters to help the main character get to the exit. As the game progresses, levels get larger and more complicated.
You move your character with the arrow keys; press space to reset a level and press Shift to alternate between each character when needed.

Puzzle Boy Flash offers 30 levels of increasing difficulty. Most of them are very challenging, making the game difficult for occasional players. If you are a puzzle fan, you will love Puzzle Boy Flash!

Adam Schroeder/Chris Hughes (FlashGameLicense) interview

Categories: Interviews   5 comments - March 3, 2008

FlashGameLicense (FGL) is an online broker of Flash games, run by Adam Schroeder and Chris Hughes. FGL was created by Adam and Chris as a service to address the difficulties in connecting game developers with the sponsors/licensers interested in their games. They were kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

FreeGamesNews: Could you please introduce yourself and let us know how did you get in Flash games?

Adam: My name is Adam Schroeder. I actually got into programming by making games. This was nearly 10 years ago and I was using Director and lingo. I quickly got sucked into “real” work until I ran across Kongregate last year. I dug up my old games and posted them. I immediately got a ton of feedback and the “game spark” was re-ignited!

Chris: My name is Chris Hughes. I have a similar story as Adam. I used to actually make Flash fan games for Ultima Online starting back in ’98 or so. I’ve been a programmer in various aspects ever since. Then a little more than a year ago I started fiddling with Flash again as a hobby, and actually made some games. Whilst searching the web for places to upload my game I stumbled upon Kongregate. Even though my games were horrible I loved the ability to get feedback quickly, and just the thought of being paid for my games excited me.

Metro SiberiaMetro.SiberiaCreated by Tommy Salomonsson and Simon StÃ¥lenhag, Metro.Siberi is the first “RSSGTG” (Retro Soviet Style Gravity Tunnel Game) ever made in Flash!

To navigate through the Siberia Underground, you need to watch out for the tricky gravity. Press and hold space bar to add thrust to your vehicle and release it before hitting the roof.

It takes imagination to turn an old concept into a fresh experience: with a great soundtrack and simple polished graphics, Metro.Siberia has plenty to offer. Some checkpoints and a few more levels would have made it even better.

Have fun!

Update: Play Metro.Siberia and compete with HIGH SCORES!

The Domino Knight

Categories: Action, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   1 comment - February 5, 2008

The Domino KnightThe Domino KnightThe Domino Knight is an interesting puzzle game designed by WildSnake Software (Blocky, Shuffle).

The goal of the game is to connect the two starting domino tiles together according to the domino rules. The rules of dominoes state that you have to match the numbers on the dominoes together. In other words, if there is a domino with a one on it then another domino with a one on it can be placed next to it either horizontally or vertically. Players can flip the dominoes using the space bar.

The dominoes are on the side of the screen coming in on a conveyor belt. Players need to put the dominoes on the board before they back up on the conveyor belt and start falling into the trash. Players have an allotted number of free chances, on the first level the chances are five and the chances increase as the level increases, before the game ends. Players also have the option to use a hammer and break the dominoes. Breaking the dominoes that can’t be used prevents them from stacking up on the conveyor belt.

The Domino Knight may sound easy, but it is challenging to get all of the dominoes on the board before they all back up. It is not as easy as just placing the dominoes on the board, because you need to match up the numbers. Sometimes, the dominoes on the conveyor belt can’t be played because they do not match up with anything on the board. The dominoes that can not be played turn a darker white/yellow color and the dominoes that can be played sort of glow white. Players have to manage the dominoes on the conveyor belt and the dominoes on the board.

The Domino Knight is fun and challenging all at the same time. If you are looking for a fun game, check out The Domino Knight.

Have fun!

ShiftShiftShift is a great platformer game with a puzzle twist developed by Antony Lavelle. The goal is to get to the door and, of course, it is not an easy task. The player is normally separated from the door by spikes or a maze. The maze is completed by “shifting” dimensions. Players can move so far on the white or black side of the map and then must switch to the other side to get further.

Players use the left and right arrow keys to control the character on the screen and the space bar causes the character to jump. There is one other “important” keyboard key, but you will find out what key that is and what it does when you play the game. The key to press is required on one of the very first puzzles the player encounters so you won’t have to go far before you unlock its secret potential.

Players will also run into swinging platforms as they progress through the level. The platforms are moved by getting the keys that are spread throughout the level. Some levels have a few keys to collect, some have only one and other levels have keys that don’t need to be gotten. The keys will swing the doors out of the way or position them to block spikes so you can reach the door or other sections of the level. Players don’t know which key controls which platform.
Shift does not contain a lot of levels, but the game does keep track of the time it takes players to complete the levels. The less time the player takes to complete the level the higher their score. Players get their names on the high score list and can replay the game to try and get better scores.

Shift is a really fun and addicting game. Many of the levels contain puzzles that are not too difficult to solve, but not so easy the game gets boring. The main puzzle of each level is trying to get your character to the door. Anyone looking for a well done puzzle game that is different from other games should check out Shift.

Have fun!

CampaignCampaignCampaign is a Flash game, created by Thump, that combines the game Risk and politics. The map in Campaign is not nearly as big as Risk, but the concept of gaining land and attacking are similar. The object of the game is to beat your opponent before he beats you. There are multiple strategies to beating your opponent, but the easiest way is to attack leader of the party. The leader of the party is one of the current candidates running for president. Players can choose from Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John Edwards for the Democrat party or Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson for the Republican party.

Players can play single or multi-player. In single player you play against the computer and in multi-player you play against other human players. Single player mode has both easy and hard modes. Easy mode is a good place to start for players that have never played the game before or have only played a few times. Hard mode is for more experienced players.

When the game starts, players choose the candidate they would like to play and then three different party members. The party members all have special abilities. There is a spinmeister, hatchet man, fundraiser and an operative to choose from. The spinmeister manipulates words and throws mud, but is able to stay above all of the mud slinging themselves. The spinmeister can attack through obstacles on the map, but the downfall is his attack does not cause that much damage. The hatchet man is a street brawler that has his own means of persuasion. The hatchet man is able to move around obstacles on the map, but is not able to capture much territory. The fundraiser rallies supporters, which keeps cash flowing in. The fundraiser has a large territory capture area, but moves slowly. The operative strikes when it is least expected and is able to cloak their movements. The operative is able to do massive damage, but they do not have a lot of power. The leader of the party has special moves they can do as well.

CampaignAfter you have chosen your party leader and your party members, it is time to play the game. Players are placed on the board and they must start capturing territory. Each player can move all four of their team members before their turn ends. Players can move and claim territory and also attack on the same turn. Players do not need to choose whether they want to claim territory or attack, which is nice. Players claim territory by moving spaces. Each party member claims different amount of territory space when they move. Once all of the spaces in a territory are the color of your party, the territory is claimed as your territory. Players want to gain as much territory as possible because this gives them money at the beginning of each turn. Money is used to do the higher powered attacks by the leader, but also a few of the party members need money for their attacks too. Money is also used to campaign in certain areas and claim unclaimed territory.

Players are not able to claim territory that has already been claimed. In other words if your opponent has already claimed territory you can not move into that territory. Territories have health and they can be attacked. Players attack a territory and when it “dies” the territory becomes unclaimed again. Once the territory is unclaimed, it can be reclaimed by the player or the opponent.

Each party member has health and can be attacked. Killing off the party members gives the opponents less moves to make because they have fewer party members. The fewer the moves the less area the opponent can cover and claim as their own territories. The game is won when the main party leader is killed off.

Campaign is the most in depth Flash game I have ever played, but it is fun as well. If you like games similar in playing style to Risk only with a political overtone, then check out Campaign and Have Fun!

BombsquadBombsquadBombsquad by T. Hartmann of Germany is an interesting arcade game in which your goal is to clean up the diamonds on the screen using your bombs.

To do so, use the left and right arrows to aim your turret located at the bottom of the game window and hold/release the space bar to charge the toggle power/shoot bombs.

Let bullets collide with your bombs to redirect them. Diamonds fallen beneath the bottom line turn into torpedoes. Hit a torpedo once to set it off and hit it another time to destroy it before it reaches the bottom line!

Bombsquad is a fun, fast paced game that is simple to learn, but difficult to master. Unfortunately, there is no high score table, but you can share your high score in the comments!

HeadcaseHeadcaseAfter the excellent Off the Rails, Nitrome is back with a brand new platformer, Headcase!

You play stuntman Norman Noggin, with an unbreakable helmet on his head, who has to make his way through a very colourful and upside-down world!

Use the arrow key or the WASD keys to move. Press spacebar to fly: you will keep going until you hit a wall.

There are many enemies trying to stop your escape, and they hurt: fly into them and hit them with your head first to get rid of them.

The graphics are great, the controls are smooth and the difficulty ramps up quickly: that’s the type of plateformer we want to play!

Enjoy the 25 levels Headcase offers, and…

RingsRingsRings is a fast paced action/puzzle game created by Stephen Harris, the author of the very popular Bloons and More Bloons.

Your main goal here is to build complete set of 4 rings by dragging rings around the board. Rings can be placed on top of larger rings, or in an empty cell. A new ring appears in the center cell and after a few seconds, it moves toward a neighboring cell. Click the center cell or press space bar to move the ring without waiting.

The game immediately ends when a new ring moves on top of a smaller ring.

Each complete set of 4 rings increases your bonus bar. Fill the bar completely to enter the Powerzone, where you get extra points for 30 seconds.

The concept of Rings is original and the game is simple and fun to play. On the downside, graphics could have been better, there is no background music and there is probably too much randomness/luck into the game. That being said, Rings is an exciting and addictive game, recommended for all the family.

Have fun!
