Flash Back: Harpoon Lagoon

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online    - May 23, 2007

Harpoon LagoonHarpoon LagoonHarpoon Lagoon is an arcade game created for Fingertime by the UK based advergaming and content developer Playerthree. The game was released in early 2006 and is strongly inspired from the famous Gold Miner.

Harpoon Lagoon is all about fishing and grabbing treasures. Help Mad Mack, a “manimal” to catch as many valuable fish and items as possible in rounds of 60 seconds each. Use the left and right arrow keys to aim your harpoon and press the spacebar to spear “something” valuable.

Unlike in Gold Miner, you can also move Mad Mack’s boat by using the ‘Z’ and ‘X’ keys, which is not really a very useful addition (IMHO).

As cash targets are reached, you can improve your chances by spending in the lagoon store. A lot of stuff is available there, and you’ll need to buy a lot of upgrades if you want to have a chance to reach higher levels.

Harpoon Lagoon requires skill and patience. With its nice graphics and its immersive soundtrack, this game is a good choice for all those who enjoy playing Gold Miner.

It won’t take you very long before you find the Core-Ore, but the overall experience is well worth a try for fans of the genre.

MotherloadMotherloadXGen Studios has released Motherload in September 2004. This Flash game is reminiscent of the Golden Age arcade games genre started in 1982 by Dig Dug and followed by Boulder Dash two years later.

The object of the game is to use a mining machine given to you by your new employer, Mr. Natas, and start digging the dangerous planet of Mars, looking for the Motherload, a fable cache of rare and valuable minerals. Your first job is to collect minerals and bring them to the surface for selling. The deeper your dig, the more valuable the minerals you’ll encounter.

Control your pod with the arrow keys. Your drill will deploy automatically if you move into minerals beside or below your pod; it’s not possible to drill straight up.

You will find on the surface of Mars everything you need to manage and upgrade your mining pod: a fuel station, a shop to sell your minerals, a junk shop to upgrade your pod, an emendation station to buy special items and repair your pod. There is also a very useful save game station (you will have to create your account if you play Motherload on Xgen Sudios website).

If graphics could have been better and if the music can get a bit annoying after a while (you can control both music and sounds levels in the options), Motherload is highly addictive and gamers can play this game for hours! You’re forewarned!

Endeavor is a platform game created by Zillix “about a dwarf trying to uncover an ancient secret. Or maybe it’s about exploring, climbing, and swimming. Or perhaps it’s about collecting powerups and treasure. Or possibly it’s just about killing things.”

With multiple endings, quests, interactive npcs and ambient critters, Endeavor has everything to become a quite popular game: it features many original musical tracks, several upgrades, and a unique climbing and endurance scheme.

Robot Wants Fishy is the third installment in the Robot Wants series, a retro sci-fi platformer where you gradually gain abilities letting you explore more of the space station until you finally catch a fish.

“You’ll have to collect a variety of power-ups to get there, and there seem to be a few hundred aliens also standing in your way.

Each time you get blown up, your time increases by 10 seconds, so try to catch Fishy as fast as you can!”

If you liked the two previous ones, you won’t be disappointed!

Bubble Spinner

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   18 comments - February 5, 2009

Bubble SPinnerBubble SpinnerBubble Spinner is a fun variation of the popular Bust-A-Move game. The objective here is to clear each level by using a bubble launcher. Shoot the colored bubbles to link 3 or more of the same color and make them disappear from the board.

Bubbles are attached to a rotative platform. Each time you shoot a bubble, the platform rotates in the direction you shot. Let a bubble hits a border of the game window and it’s game over!

A nice and addictive 15 minute-diversion!

Mega Miner is a Motherload-like game developed by Alillm.

“Mine minerals and sell them for cash. Upgrade your equipment to dig deeper and find rarer ores.

Complete missions to earn extra money.”

I will take you a couple of hours to complete all the missions, assuming you make a good use of teleporters.

Addictive game, but quite repetitive after a while.

Pedro and the 100 Year Quest

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Platform, Puzzle   17 comments - February 17, 2011

Pedro and the 100 Year Quest is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer that will remind you of the Robot Wants series.

“Your boss has sent you into the basement to collect lost back issues of Boys’ Life, only as you go around, he’ll find lots of other jobs he’d be happy to see you do.

But the 100-year anniversary party is starting in 40 minutes, and they need to show off those issues… how much can you get done before it’s too late?

There are also secret codes in the game that you can find in Boys’ Life magazine to gain some very nice bonuses.”

I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this one will be rated 4+ stars!

Polar Drift – David Thorburn

Categories: Action, Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   3 comments - February 18, 2007

Polar DriftPolar DriftPolar Drift is the latest game released by David Thorburn on his website, Teagames.

The goal here is to race your snowmobile on eight different tracks, “and take a shot at the top times”!

Use the arrow keys to move your snowmobile. Don’t expect to ride your snowmobile like a pro after two minutes: driving it is pretty tricky on the icy tracks and you will need to practice for a while to get used to the controls!

There are no other racers on the track, but you can race against your “ghost” (a recording of your best time) by playing again the same race. Without that feature, the game wouldn’t have been near as fun.

Collect stars to reduce your time, use the turbo pads for a speed boost and don’t forget to tweak and tune your snowmobile for optimal performances.

And if you think that the high score pages have been hacked, think again and ask yourself how did some players take a shortcut on the open sea…

Bullet Bill 2

Categories: 5 minute, Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Skill   3 comments - November 15, 2006

Bullet Bill 2Bullet Bill 2Bullet Bill 2 was released yesterday and is available on The author, Ian Kelly, 14, from Scotland, revamped and improved the original Bullet Bill, a simple side-scroller inspired from the Super Mario Bros. world, in which you have to avoid dangerous obstacles like platforms or walls.

The controls are now with the mouse instead of the arrow keys and you will also find a checkpoint in every level, so if you die after reaching this checkpoint, you won’t have to go back to the beginning of the current level anymore.

With much more levels, better graphics and the new mouse controls, Bullet Bill 2 is a nice improvement to the previous version (check both to see the difference). That being said, like any other side-scroller, Bullet Bill 2 suffers from being repetitive, but is a nice experience for a short break.

Gold Digger

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   7 comments - November 8, 2007

Gold DiggerGold DiggerGold Digger is a Dutch clone (some would say rip off) of the famous Gold Miner, an arcade game released more than three years ago.

The goal here remains the same: use your claw and reel to mine gold and other treasures out of the earth. The claw doesn’t stop swinging back and forth and all you have to do is to click at the right time to stop the claw from swinging and start lowering it.

Just like in the original game, each level (15 in total) provides a target amount of money that you must collect within 60 seconds. If you don’t meet the goal by the end of the level, the game is over. Your money carries over from on level to the next one.

Gold Digger is not innovative by any means, but if you are a Gold Miner fan, you won’t be disappointed by this one!
