Bubble Struggle

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   3 comments - August 14, 2006

Bubble StruggleBubble StruggleBubble Struggle (originally known as Bubble Trouble) is an arcade game developed in late 2002 by the Croatian Krešimir Cvitanović. Your character is a little devil that has to move back and forth avoiding and shooting bubbles that bounce all around the playfield.

Your goal is to pop all the bubbles in order to progress to the next level. To add more pressure, the author added a timer for every level, and you will have to clear the playfield before the time runs out or you will lose a life. Some bubbles contain power-ups such like weapon upgrades, shied, extra-time or extra-life. They can also contain some money for extra-points.

Use the left and right keys to move your character and press the spacebar to shoot the bubbles bouncing in the air. Note that there is an option to define your own controls if needed.

The author implemented a level code feature that is very useful for players who don’t want to replay any level more than once (except the first one) to finish the game, or for those who want to train themselves with later levels that are pretty difficult to complete.

With decent graphics and animations, a two player mode and 22 levels, Bubble Struggle is much more entertaining than Bubbles, a game featured in Free Games News mid-June. Overall, another true jewel that has been played so far nearly 16 million times!

Square Meal

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   4 comments - July 30, 2007

Square MealSquare MealSquare Meal is the latest arcade game created by Nitrome.

The goal here is to help a little troll to escape a 50 levels dungeon. To do this, you need to eat all the monsters in each level, but before you can do this, you must stun them by hitting them with blocks.

Use the arrow keys to move and press space bar to eat.

As usual with Nitrome, the game is very polished and nicely done. Unfortunately, if Square Meal is fun for 5 minutes, you will quickly realize that the lack of a solid enemy A.I. is a serious problem to keep players interested for long.

That being said, Square Meal will probably appeal to young people and at least deserves a try.

Gold Miner

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   2 comments - June 20, 2006

Gold MinerGold MinerGold Miner is a little Flash game released two years ago and another easy to learn and tricky to play addicting game.

In Gold Miner, your avatar is a greedy… gold miner who will use his claw and reel to mine gold and other treasures out of the earth. Your claw doesn’t stop swinging back and forth. Press the down arrow key to stop the claw from swinging and start lowering it.

Heavy objects like rocks and large gold nuggets are hard to reel up. The bigger the gold nuggets are, the more valuable they are. Avoid rocks if possible as they are almost valueless. Bags contain a random amount of money, a strength power-up or a stick of dynamite. Each level provides a target amount of money that you must collect within 60 seconds. If you don’t meet the goal by the end of the level, the game is over. Your money carries over from on level to the next one.

Gold Miner was an instant hit when it was released; this is probably why two commercial sequels were launched last year, Gold Miner Second Edition and Gold Miner Vegas with improved graphics and more power-ups.

If you haven’t already played Gold Miner, you should really give it a try.

ShoOot 3

ShoOot 3ShoOot 3ShoOot 3 is the next installment in the ShoOot arcade game series created by Tonypa.

Your goal here is similar to the previous episode: destroy as many circles as you can with your square that moves randomly from one point to another.

Rotate your square with your mouse and click to fire.

This game is not exactly the most exciting one you’ll ever see, but if you are looking for a basic and quick shooter, ShoOot 3 is a fun 5 minute diversion.

Robots Wants Ice Cream

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Platform   6 comments - September 24, 2010

Robot Wants Ice Cream is the fourth installment in the Robot Wants series, a retro sci-fi platformer where you gradually gain abilities letting you explore more of the space station until you finally catch an ice cream.

“Fed up with Kitty’s shenanigans, Robot ejects him from the spaceship and flies off to Happy Ice Cream Planet with Puppy for a treat. When they arrive, things are not as they had hoped…

This is the grand finale of the Homerian epic Robot Wants saga, and you don’t want to miss the SHOCKING TWIST ENDING. It’s like M. Night Shyamalan, but no evil plants. And Robot wasn’t dead all along. But otherwise, it’s totally that.

The “grand finale” is as good as the previous ones!

Rebubbled (Bubble Struggle II)

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Video walkthrough   1,296 comments - March 19, 2007

RebubbledRebubbledDo you remember the popular Bubble Struggle (also know as Bubble Trouble) created in 2002 by the Croatian Krešimir Cvitanović. The good news is that the (very) long awaited sequel to this game was released in an alpha version two days ago!

Our little devil is back in Rebubbled, and once again, your goal here is to pop all the bubbles in a limited time to progress to the next level.

If the gameplay is close to the original game, the author put a lot of effort to improve this second version of Bubble Struggle: better graphics, smoother animations, tons of levels, tons of new power-ups (the flower and the freeze are my favorite ones), several bubble types, ladders, trampolines and more!

Use the arrow keys to move your character and press the spacebar to shoot the bubbles bouncing in the air.

Difficulty is well managed and increases gradually as you make progress through the game. Later levels are very difficult: fortunately, Rebubbled allows you to restart from the last level you played, so you won’t have to play the same level again and again.

As mentioned above, Rebubbled is not completely finished yet and some extra features should be added soon (sound, level editor and a 2 player mode).

That being said, the single player is very addictive and a lot of fun and we can easily say that Rebubbled is much better than the original.

Have fun!

Sunday Lawn

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   93 comments - May 2, 2007

Sunday LawnSunday LawnSunday Lawn is the latest arcade game created by the team at Donut Games. It’s time for Charlie to mow the lawn in the backyard today. Unfortunately, there are many hedgehogs and dogs there, and they don’t look friendly!

Control Charlie using the arrow keys on your keyboard and mow all the grass to reach the next level. Don’t hit any animal or the game is over! Try to mow as much grass as you can in one path to score more point.

Sunday Lawn borrows some elements from games like PacMan or Frog Day Afternoon. Building long paths through the backyard while avoiding dogs can be quite challenging, and you’ll need good reflexes and some patience if you want to complete the 8 levels available!

PacMan

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   3 comments - September 1, 2006

PacManPacManPacMan is a very popular arcade game if not the one that “started it all”. Created by Tohru Iwatani for Namco, it was released in Japan in 1979 and became an instant hit.

A few of us know that the hero was first named “PuckMan” evidently due to his shape. However, before its release in the United States, the title was changed to “PacMan” because PuckMan was an easy target for vandals to convert into a vulgarity.

This Flash version of PacMan was developed by Paul Neave in 2004 and is so far the closest version from the original. So close that the game is no longer available on Neave’s website “due to legal constraints surrounding its misuse of Namco’s trademark and copyright”.

Luckily, the game spread everywhere on the Web, and it can be easily found in many portals. Meet “Blinky”, “Pinky”, “Inkey” (original name “Inky”) and “Clyde” in this near-perfect adaptation! Have fun!

Gamma Bros.

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online   2 comments - June 30, 2006

Gamma Bros.Gamma Bros.Gamma Bros. is a brand new space shooter and the second game created by Miles Tilmann and Richard Grillotti from PiXelJAM games.

“The Gamma Brothers spend their days working in a huge space station near Jupiter. What could they possibly be working on? Something very important, no doubt.

The Gamma Brothers also understand the importance of not working. Every day at quitting time they hop into their commuter vehicles for the long, difficult journey back to earth. Every day, to and from work, they must survive many vicious and clever alien attacks!

Gamma Bros.It is up to YOU to guide the Gamma Brothers home. Prepare yourself for the ultimate space commute battle!”

First, chose one of the two brothers to pilot your spaceship. Use the arrow keys to move. Use ‘A’,’W’,’S’,’D’ keys to fire and press space bar to pause the game. You can reconfigure the control keys under the game’s info section, which is really helpful for all these players who don’t use a QWERTY keyboard!

Defeat enemy waves and collect coins and power ups. Buy new power ups from the flying salesman coming up from time to time and defeat the different bosses before going back home!

For their second game, the authors did a great job: graphics fit very excellently the retro-like Galaxian theme, animations are very fluid and the music is always quiet and relaxing. The game is intense and really addictive and the increase of difficulty is very well managed throughout the three different levels.

With Gamma Bros., PiXelJAM has launched a really exciting and fun game reminding us that graphics aren’t everything. Great!

Have fun!

Update: a download version of Gamma Bros. for both Mac and Pc is also available for free!

Bubble Islands

Categories: Arcade, Flash, Free, Games, Online, Puzzle   13 comments - February 1, 2007

Bubble IslandsBubble IslandsBubble Islands is a new retro-style arcade/puzzle game launched two days ago by dot-invasion, a Swiss design/entertainment studio created in 2005 by Alexandre Renevey.

Bubble Islands is strongly inspired by Puyo Puyo, a game developed in 1991 by the Japanese company Compile.

The version currently online at the time of writing is a finalist of the 2007 IGF Festival in the Best Web Browser Game category. The game isn’t finished yet but is already playable!

Two different modes are available: the arcade mode and the puzzle mode.

Bubble IslandsThe object of the game in the arcade mode is to defeat each of your opponents in a duel by filling their grid up to the top with parasites. To do so, connect at least 4 bubbles of the same color to make them disappear. The faster you connect your bubbles, the better.

In the puzzle mode, your goal is to remove ALL the bubbles from each of the 10 islands in each level. Once you’ve completed a level, the next one is unlocked.

Move your character with the arrow keys and press the space bar to drop your bubbles and to switch them as well while falling.

I spent almost two hours playing with this game today, and overall, if the concept of Bubble Islands is not really innovative, the game is amazingly fun and addictive. The eye candy graphics and the animations are impressive, the different characters are really cute, and the game offers many challenges and a great replay value, thanks to the two game modes available and to the special characters that you can unlock and use once all the others defeated.

And wait, there is more to come. As mentioned above, the game isn’t finished yet and a new version should be released soon, with a multiplayer mode, hi-scores and a puzzle submission option! We are really looking forward to the final version!

Have fun!

Update: walkthrough for the puzzle part here.
