The number puzzle: Show
Thanks dg! In general, how do these puzzles work? I have never seen one before so I have no idea where to start and how you got your solution.
columns and rows need to add to the number given (1-9) each digit can only be used once.
There are two basic rules:
1. The digits in every column should add up to the number above the column, and all the digits in a single column should be different.
2. The digits in every row should add up to the number to the left of the row, and these, too, should all be different.
Start off with the smallest numbers, because these give you the smallest number of options. For example, if you need 2 digits to add up to 3, they can only be 1 and 2 (but you may have to experiment with their order). Also, 4 can only be the sum of 1 and 3, because you can’t have 2 and 2 in the same row or column. If you need 3 numbers to add up to 7, they can only be 1, 2, and 4 (think about it). Generally, you may need to experiment a little and resort to trial and error.
To add to dg’s comment, large numbers can also be helpful. If you have a 17 with only two boxes, they have to be 8 and 9 (but again, you don’t know the order).
Similarly, 24 with three boxes must be 7,8,9.
stuck with the last piece of puzzle, where is it?
It took me a while to find the last piece.
