Shadow Escape is a Room Escape game from Japanese website Kotorinosu. For an unknown reason, you find yourself locked in an unknown room.

Look around closely and find some useful items and clues to eventually escape the room!

   Walkthrough:

   Show

   Take a long look at the floor lamp. Go ahead, yank the chain. Nothing. Note the gold key at the end of the chain.

   Look under the bed. Not much happening there. It’s dark.

   Look at the clock. You can change the time, like setting an alarm.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Three impressions high on the wall, maybe skylights. It would be nice to open those up and get some light on the situation.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Look at the waste basket. There’s a yellow puzzle piece in there. Take it. Play with it. Learn it.

   Look at the table. There’s a cute design on the table top. Happy Morning! What does that mean? Why is the bunny sad and why is the kitten happy? Is the bunny in mourning? Is the kitty in love?

   The table has a shelf. Take the box inside. Look it over. Are we playing the ancient Simon game, or do we need to learn its secret?

   Look at the safe. Roman numerals encode a combination. It’s good to know the Romans embraced a base ten system after all was said and done. Silly historians.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Look at the flowers. White, blue and red. Something to remember. Touch the picture. There’s a green puzzle piece underneath. Take it. Remember the picture. Maybe those puzzle pieces will form one of those tangram puzzles.

   Look at the drawers underneath the picture. Open the left side and find a blue puzzle piece. Open the right side and find a light bulb.

   Now look at the desk lamp. It needs a light bulb, doesn’t it? So insert the one you found. It fits! Notice you can adjust the angle of the lamp. Click the base of the lamp and you have light.

   Click on the center of the desk. Hmm… a design. With Vs and lines. That could well be some of them Roman numerals we’re always hearing about. Looks like a VI, an II and an IV. No, not like a hospital IV, just the number four encoded in an ancient numerical system.

   Look at the drawers on the right side of the desk. Open the drawer on the right. There’s a gree book. It has one picture. There’s a smiley-face with an arrow down to a circle, and that’s over a picture of a light bulb. Maybe our light bulb.

   Look at the desk-type drawers. Three there, two are locked. Open the middle one. Nothing? No, need a better angle on the situation. Push to the back of the drawer and there’s a red puzzle piece. Hmmm… doesn’t really seem like a tangram now.

   Look at the desk above the drawers. Duck feet. Who knew?

   Turn right.

   Show

   Let’s open that safe. Enter our “VI, II, IV” code and the lock clicks. Open it up and take a piece of cardboard out. Look at it. The cardboard has some cutouts. And a heart in the middle. How sweet.

   Where have I seen a heart before? Ahhh… the love-struck kitten. Look at the table again, and place the cardboard over the design. The hearts match.

   What else is revealed? Well, there’s the word “Morning” (no exclamation point now that it’s no longer happy). And there, on it’s side, you see “7:30” displayed.

   Turn right twice.

   Time to set the alarm. The first button indicates morning, the next two set the hours and tens of minutes. The alarm rings at 7:30!

   Too early. Need to smack the snooze button. And there go the window shades. You’ve now automatically turned back to the left.

   Better investigate those windows. Nothing.

   Turn left twice.

   Show

   Yep, they cast a shadow on the floor. But there’s a bump in the middle of the middle window. Better look again.

   I know. You already looked. Just trust me.

   Turn left twice.

   Look where the bump was on the center window. Yes, a silver key. Toldja. Take the key.

   Turn left twice.

   Look at the desk drawers on the right. Use the silver key on the bottom drawer. Take the duck. Look at him. He has a slot on his back. But there’s no way to open him up.

   Remember the duck feet on the desk, though? Maybe the duck belongs there? Go to the right side of the desk and place the duck where the feet are indicated. Kind of like Arthur Murray without the two-step.

   The duck’s head is kind of round. Like the circle on the picture of the book. And that has something to do with the light bulb, I guess. Maybe I should shine some light directly on the duck head?

   Adjust the head of the desk lamp and look at the duck again. There are symbols behind him!

   Turn right.

   Take a closer look at the wall behind the duck. A smile. Now that looks a lot like the picture in the green book. Remember? An arrow pointing down from the smile toward the duck head.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Look at the right side of the desk again, this time focusing on the symbols. A bunch of pointers. I wonder how to read them, though.

   Now the book design indicates I start with the smile, so I’ll write down that progression, as if I’m looking straight up toward the smiley-face.

   Up, Right, Up, Down, Left, Left, Up, Right.

   Let’s look at that old Simon box again. The keys look a lot like the pointers in the design. I think we should try the duck code.

   It works! The buttons seem to be arranged backwards, but they’re in the right order. The box clicks open and you can take a small cutting tool. And I know just what to cut.

   Turn left.

   Look at the floor lamp again. Cut the chain and take the gold key.

   Turn right.

   Show

   Use the key to open the top drawer. There’s a flashlight. Play with it. Hey, maybe for once in one of these rooms, it already has working batteries. Just a thought. Don’t get mad.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Look under the bed. It’s still dark. Well, try the flashlight, anyway. It works! Take a small coin.

   Turn right.

   Show

   That coin looks like it’s just the right size for the duck’s back. Take the duck again. Look at him, turn him around. Insert the coin.

   Hmmm… that’s not what I expected. He’s pointing to the left. Well, put him back on the desk and maybe we’ll understand the point of this madness. Can’t move him anymore now, so we must be on the right track. Step back. The shadow is pointing, too.

   Turn right.

   Show

   Click on the shadow. It’s pointing off into nothingness. Might as well touch the nothingness.

   Hey, there’s a button here. Press it. The wall opens up, and there’s a ladder.

   Click at the top of the ladder. You see a pair of brackets around the ladder and screws. Being a veteran of room escape games, you know what screws mean. You do, right? Have you ever tried one of these without a screwdriver? No? Then why didn’t you bring a bleeping screwdriver with you before you started this game?

   Go to the top of the ladder. Just dark up here. Yeah, too dark. What’s the point? Better try the flashlight just in case.

   Voila! A design on the wall. It looks like some math symbols. But you remember the window panes were a little odd on those skylights. And the X seems to be marking a spot above the middle window.

   Go down and turn left.

   Yes, you can focus in on where the X would be on the floor, above the shadow of the middle window. Something’s going on here.

   Try the flashlight again. Nothing. Wait, there’s a little black mark on the wood – thought it was from when I sneezed on the monitor, but maybe? Click it. Some of the floor disappears (what the heck was that?) and there’s a trap door.

   Open it. Look inside. Take the key. Can’t go down yet, but the key might fit the front door. We’re out, yay!

   Turn left.

   Show

   Yes, the key fits the front door lock. And it’s time to escape. But there’s another door in the way.

   Focus in on the black square on the door. I think my little tangram pieces may go there. I can put each one on a corner of the square.

   Together, they seem to outline something. Originally, I thought the bird picture on the desk was a tangram. Maybe it is after all, but the puzzle pieces outline it rather than make up the tangram.

   Right I am. The green piece goes in the upper left, the red piece in the upper right, the yellow piece in the bottom left and the blue piece in the bottom right.

   And… I’m out!

   No. Just as I’m about to run to freedom, bars come down. But I see something next to the bars.

   Take it. Yep, the screwdriver.

   Back up and turn right twice.

   Go up the ladder and unscrew those little brackets. Yes, all four screws. You’re not going to get out of doing a little bit of work, are you? Take the brackets. They disappear immediately, just like the screwdriver.

   Back up and you can take the ladder. Now I know where to go.

   Turn left.

   Show

   Try and put the ladder in the trap door. I dare you. No, don’t look at first, that won’t work. Throw it in there from a distance. It slides down nicely.

   Go down the ladder now. There’s a hallway, turn right.

   And now there’s the tangram picture again. And on your right some buttons with card suits. And on your left a picture with an arrow.

   Look at the picture for a while. Imagine yourself becoming very sleepy, and the circles in the picture are moving, turning around. Yes, you can sort of see shapes there in the middle. The right one is definitely the top and bottom of a heart. So you can figure out the rest. They all seem to be the top and bottom of a card suit.

   Club, Diamond, Spade, Heart.

   Well, let’s try the buttons on the right side of the wall. That worked nicely. There’s our tangram duck again. A white one. Take him.

   Now focus on the tangram shape on the back wall, and place the white duck in the middle. Presto, a gold key! Take the key.

   Back up, go back up the ladder, turn left.

   Open the door and go back in. Look closely at the gate and there’s a keyhole. Use the gold key. It clicks.

   Now there’s a door in your inventory. Look at it. The little guy (no smiley-face this time) is pointing toward the keyhole.

   No idea why. But looking at the lock, you see a bunch of shapes that sort of resemble a circle. Click on them a bit.

   You’re quickly assembling a smiley face. When it’s complete, the gate rises! Now you can escape.
