Desktop Tower Defense is one of the most popular Tower Defense game today. Created by Paul Preece, this game, similar to Flash Element TD and Flash Circle TD from David Scott, was released in March and currently ranks just over 6,000 on Alexa. According to a report at Gigaom, the game had 4 million unique visitors and 9 millions plays during April!
Here is the site’s description of the game: “DTD is a fun flash based puzzle / strategy game where you have to protect your desktop from invaders by spending money on attacking pieces and building a maze for them to follow. Strangely addictive yet stress relieving… How many levels can you survive? “
What makes DTD different from any other Tower Defense game is that the game starts with an empty map! To complete all 49 levels, you will need to place your towers wisely and create a long maze to funnel the creeps, giving you the time to defeat all of them. The site contains a gallery of mazes created by players with their score: it. If you never played DTD before, you should give it a go before starting a new game.
DTD is very addictive and offers a high replay value, thanks to the empty map. Its success speaks for itself, and a new update to version 1.5 is expected soon, with new graphics, new creeps, new towers, new modes and faster code. It should also be translated into a few other languages.
Paul Preece announced a few days ago that he quit his job to become an independent games developer. And guess what? With the success of their respective games, Paul and David Scott have decided to join their forces and to start a production team: welcome and long life to Paul & Daves’s Novel Concepts!
Update: version 1.5 is live!

alexa isnt all that great, its far from accurate so i woudnt be so quick to quote numbers from there since its kinda meaningless. its only a count of traffic by people who have the alexa toolbar installed, and i don’t know anyone who has it.
Any Mouse – You’re absolutely right, Alexa ranking is not really reliable. That being said, with 4 million unique visitors and 20 million page views for April, DTD is definitely a winner!
