   square above the triangle on the wall. Use the screwdriver to open the panel and put in the battery. Then, note the yellow electrical diagram…use that on the panel screen to make that shape and get more coloured squared number

    In the late 18th Century, Marie Antionette, in response to severe shortages of bread during a famine in France, was alleged to reply, “then let them eat cake.”

    This has become one of the great catch-phrases in history, beating out such classics as “what’cha talking about, Willis?” and “There’s no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?”

    Meanwhile, it’s time to enjoy the 114th effort from Parallellove, something about a cake. Yeah, I know. More than a little frightening. Batter up, it’s going to be meringuey ride.

    You enter a room with rich, orange Italian marble flooring. Perhaps the marble was imported from parts of France sympathetic to Marie Antoinette. Or perhaps a marble floor is just a marble flor.

    You see a video screen on the wall. There are four buttons that look like Tetris pieces. Press the buttons and they rotate. Press them as many times as you like, but they’re not moving anywhere or arranging themselves into little rows at the bottom of the screen.

    You press the button on the left once, and two 6×6 grids appear on the screen. There’s a purple number and a green number. Plus colored squares. It’s not clear what the numbers are, since the colored squares make the answer ambiguous.

    There’s the usual clue book on the floor. Just four plus signs. Maybe you’ll get to do some math later after you’ve found a magic pencil.

    You see an arrow pointing up on the right side of the wall. So you click above the arrow and reveal a hidden panel. The panel is blank, but there’s a small metal plate screwed on to the wall below. Time to find a screwdriver, maybe one with a blue handle.

    Oh, and yeah, there’s a combination lock with four digits on the door. You know the drill: you need to find that combination or there will be no cake for dessert, no matter what Marie says.

    You turn to the right, and there’s a sight you’ve never seen before: a sofa, cut completely in half. You look at the cut, and it’s near-perfect. No saw marks, nothing. What was once a four-cushion rattan sofa now has only two cushions. You wonder where the other half is. Maybe there’s a parallel (love) universe where you’ll find the right side of this sofa.

    You look under the half-sofa on the right side and find the red-handled Nippers. Perhaps there’s something hanging by super-staples somewhere else in the room. Searching the cushions, you fail to find the red key, which has you worried.

    There’s a plant next to the half-sofa. You look closely and pull out a Screwdriver Edge that looks more like a drill bit. Even the screws are getting screwy in these rooms lately.

    You see a picture frame on the wall. You look closer and it’s blank, as it always is these days. You see a light blue card sheet sticking out from under the frame. You take the Sheet and see dot pairs from top to bottom.

    You turn to the right and see a desk next to a credenza with three drawers. On top of the desk, you take a slice of Cake.

    What is this monstrosity? It looks more like a castle sliced in half than a slice of cake. There’s a strawberry rising above the cake like a turret. It’s bright, glassy red and has white dots on it, like windows. I’d rather eat a Christmas tree ornament than sample that strawberry. There’s a smaller white ornament next to it that’s somehow standing on top of the cake on its own, with no visible support. This is frightening. Maybe it’s possessed.

    The icing is unusually even and thin, I suspect it’s cardboard painted white. Inside the cake, we witness three evenly-placed colored rectangles. I’ve never seen any fruit this shape or this color. I can only conclude this cake is actually dangerous – the colored rectangles might well be explosives and the turrets on top are projectiles designed for maximum damage.

    You shudder involuntarily and place the cake in your adventure bag.

    You look under the desk, on the left side, and find the Red Key stapled to the bottom of a drawer. You use the Nippers to retrieve the key. You look behind the credenza on the right side, but don’t see anything useful.

    You use the Red Key on a drawer and take a Battery and a second Cake bomb.

    Turning to the right, you see a tall chest next to a table. You take a third Cake weapon from the bottom shelf of the table. You look behind the chest on the left side and find the Blue Key.

    There’s a small grey box on the table. Time to solve the tile puzzle and collect the Yellow Key. This time, the tile puzzle depicts a carved pumpkin.

    It’s time to open some more drawers and find the rest of the screwdriver and something to put a battery into.

    You turn to the left and use the Yellow Key. You find the fourth slice of Cakexplosives and a design on the back wall of the drawer. It looks like two Hs, or four tetris pieces arranged so that they form two Hs.

    You use the Blue Key and take the fifth slice of Cake shrapnel (surely the United Nations will step in and end this adventure) and the rest of the Screwdriver. You put the Screwdriver together.

    You go to the left twice and use the Screwdriver to remove the metal plate on the wall. You place the Battery in the spot the plate concealed. There’s a yellow design on the small black screen, looks like four dot-nodes connected by lines. Perhaps another variation of four tetris blocks.

    Moving to the video screen, you notice that the way you’ve arranged the tetris buttons matches the two-H pattern from the desk drawer. And re-arranging them to match the four dot-nodes produces a new design with red and yellow blocks.

    You take the light blue Sheet and put it in the clue book. There you find four equations: red plus red, blue plus blue, yellow plus yellow and grey plus grey. This must be how to interpret the designs on the video screen.

    Without the red block, the purple number is a 3. Without the blue block, it’s a 2. Without the yellow block, the green number is a 5. Without the red blocks, the dark red number is a 1. Without the grey blocks, the dark yellow number is a 0. And without the yellow blocks, it’s a 4.

    You add the codes together. Red-3 plus Red-1 is 4, Yellow-5 plus Yellow-4 is 9. Then Blue-2? Or Grey-0? Maybe those are doubled, but that would violate the two repeating numbers in a combination code rule.

    You try it anyway: 4490. It doesn’t work. You try the Blue-2 alone: 4290. That doesn’t work, either. Clearly, there’s another way to look at this.

    Now you look at the blocks as including the selected color, but excluding the others. You get Red-2, Blue-3, Yellow-6, Red-7, Yellow-0, Grey-4.

    Adding those together, you find Red-9, Blue-6 (doubled), Yellow-6, Grey-8 (doubled). Again, you remove the doubling, and try 9364. Again, the combination fails to click open.

    One more way to look at them? Maybe you need to find another grey number and another blue number.

    Are the colors of the big numbers important? You note that red and blue make purple. So what makes green? That’s blue and yellow. So you look at the green number as potentially holding all blue squares. That gives you a 5 as the second blue number.
    Blue-3 and Blue-5 gives you 8.

    The dark yellow on the second screen must be grey and yellow, so the the dark red must be red and grey. So the second grey number must be 1, from the dark red portion of the red figure. Grey-1 and Grey-4 gives you 5.

    You try this combination: 9865. The lock clicks and you’re quickly out of the room.

    You open your adventure bag carefully and hand the five pieces of cake to a waiting officer from Homeland Security. All is safe now. Well, maybe. You hear a big explosion as you’re walking away. Poor officer.

    …

    Anemic often goes to visit his girlfriend on the weekends, so the recent Parallellove schedule change makes it difficult to work on these when posted.

    @Anemic: great WT, as usual. I’m not happy with this puzzle and the solution. As you noticed, there is more than one way to get a code, and the only way to distinguish between them is trial and error. A true puzzle should have just one solution.
